SUPERCHARGERS & INTERCOOLERS

Postby FLAWLES » Thu Jun 03, 2004 6:34 pm

i think this q has been asked before but i will ask it again

will u get a craap load of lag when running a front mount intercooler on a 4ag-ze " with s/c "
keeping in mind im running a 10psi pulley

as i reckon u will
between planting ur foot ingaging the s/c clutch boost flying around to the i/cooler and then back to the engine
there would be a gap between running n/a then waam forced induction

what do u think?????

With a supercharger, there will be no measurable lag, at least with any half decent piping setup.

Worst thing for lag in any forced induction setup is a oversized intercooler, a large intercooler will have more volume than the entire piping and intake manifold put together - and then some.

I have a mate whos got a spec cooler on his gtz. For running only 6psi, it goes damn quick. Also has extractors, and exhust

But what do i know... i drive a hoonda 8O which is slightly quicker than his..

Will he get good gains upgrading to a bigger pulley kit? Anyone suggest a size?

why only 6psi? is he getting some pressure drop with that cooler setup?

or just a pies supercharger?

What i have found i kinda like lag when the throttle is closed.
Because the intercooler and pipes are after the throttle plate when you take you foot off the gas it takes a few sec's to suck all the air out before the car slows.

Back in the day when I was messing around with sc setups and big coolers etc I found the following. A big cooler and longish pipe work would give, not so much lag(when u wanted the power down), but poorer/slow throttle responce, (like it would hesitate b4 it would to do, what u wanted it to do) if u can understand that. Also on sc setups it seems the bigger or more eff the cooler is the less boost pressure u will have. My understanding of this is that the sc is passing a certain amount of air (nothing can cahnge this) and when it goes through the cooler the air is becoming more denser, taking up less space and therefore boost pressure is down. I did have some numbers to back this up but they r long gone.

Yeh its only running 6-7 psi. I thought standard was higher than that also.

Only thing is that ive found, is they dont have the top end pull.. Instead good torque from 3000- 5500.. The top end is shit actually.

Why not just front mount the existing intercooler? Piping might look a bit odd being made the fit the entry and exits to the intercooler, but the main problem with the factory intercooler is that it gets heat soaked on top of the head.

Front mount it, and problem disappears. Minimal lag from new piping, don't have to buy a new intercooler, and don't have to paint it black if you're going for the sleeper look

sorry
thats what i was expecting poor throttle respones

so basicly what bbrad is saying if i have a big i/c and try and keep the i/c piping to a minimime i should be ok and say wot i would lose about 1 to 2 psi but gain power in the long run
sound right??

how big is a standard turbo mr2 i/c ??? i heard vr4 ones were supposed to be the shiz niz size for them but anything bigger would be a waste or have very minimal gain ?
