Blown Head gasket, maybe..

About a month or so ago I put in way too much engine oil--I put in about 5L, and some of you might remember 'cause I put a post about it then--and as some of you had predicted, problems started to arise.

Firstly, my car is consuming too much gas. I used to get about 500km full tank, but I only get about 450km at best.

Secondly, I feel that I my car had lost some power. I often get noticable flat spots in acceleration.

Thinking the spark plugs might have been fouled, I checked the plugs, and they were in fact seriously fouled. Replacing them improved the condition for the afternoon but problems came right back soon after.

The engine sounds rough and irregular, and I hear a soft hissing sound when I accelerate.

I drained the excess oil the next day I put in, so all the problem might not be related to the oil issue, but all started to happen right after the incidence.

With all these, I am guessing that the head gasket might have been blown.

Any ideas??

I have have a blacktop and put in Castrol R 5-30.

Monitor your oil levels daily. If they drop noticably, then there is a good chance your gasket is buggered.
But with the symptoms you described, it could be a plethora of things really.

With the head gasket you usually notice the coolant temps going haywire, drop in coolant levels and a mayonaise like mess in your oil filler cap From what you mentioned though (i.e. fouled plugs, rough running etc) you could have any number of problems from leaky exhaust valve stem seals through piston ringlands cracked/broken pistons etc

As has been mentioned, keep an eye on oil levels and maybe consider getting a cylinder compression or leak down test done to rule piston/ringland problems out.

generally if you stick in to much oil it will cause the crank to swim in the oil and really rob power plus you can blow seals etc cause it cause's the crank case to build up more pressure than normal so you might haveven effected the rings (hence the gas consumption)

If you are using no oil or water, and the temp guage isn't fluctuating, then you might simply have stuffed plug leads. It's pretty common.

Get an auto sparky to test them for you.

If you hear a hissing you may have an air leak which will cause everything you listed with the oil over filled you may have over pressurised the crankcase blowing a breather off the manifold or block so look around the engine for damages or disconnected pipes.

have a look at all the map sensor piping, sounds like its broken sumwhere.

mine broke due to vibration where it runs by the intake manifold, it was hard to find it aye, very sneaky problem. i had rough idling, stalling, and black as spark plugs.

if u blown ya head gasket yo'd know!! it may be blowing due to old age and bad maintanance record, ie no coolant, just water in radiator over tha last 18 years
