Engine flush or not to???

Postby kow » Sat Jun 05, 2004 3:59 pm

I've just purchased a new import, 75kM on the clock, service history unknown. I'm wondering if anyone has had any experiances, good or bad on either using those cans of engine flush or of using one of the engine flushing machines (eg as used by 'Oil Changers') is it worth it or does it do more harm than good?

It would be a good idea to chuck some engine flush in there.
STP is pretty good stuff. Other people say that its just diesel but theres other detergents in there as well.
It's good, I gave my engine a flush when I first got my MR2 and the engine ran much smoother. And you shoulda seen the stuff coming out of my oil sump. Not just black, but there was even a few thick blubs of it, was like jelly almost.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Yeah, go for it. Ive used it in many engines with no probs. Some people say you can get blocked lines from bits comming off, but Ive never had a problem. Cant beat regular oil changes either- when I first got my levin I put a flush through then changed the oil every 5 months, looking into the filler it went from gunky to spottless eventually.
Ive got the cam covers off the supra at the moment cleaning it up- shiz does the gunky dried oil collect over the years.

flush

Postby JasonZE » Sat Jun 05, 2004 9:09 pm

Running the engine for 10 mins at idle while at normal operating temp with a flush is good practice and very common in most workshops
Be sure to drain hot also.
Change the oil every 6000km or 6 months and flush each time and your engine will get cleaner each time.

I have heard of someone using one of these products, it didnt get rid of all the crud build up but just loosened it, it later blocked the oil gallery's to the head and it suffered severe damage to the cams, This may have been an isolated case maybe they didnt do the flush correctly or maybe the engine was poked before hand im not sure just what I was told.

I guess if it made enough crud to come off and block an oil gallerly then it probably would have eventually done the same flush or not.

flush

Postby JasonZE » Sun Jun 06, 2004 12:31 pm

Yes it must be done very hot and for at least 10 mins to disolve the crud so it can drain out the bung hole.
But it sounds like the guys engine was on last legs anyway.
As with all flushes and additives its preventative maintainence not a repair for knackered engines which most people seem to hope for they are not miracle in a bottle :!:

For the hard core clean... do oil change using budgie oil, use flush, dump budgie oil and replace with nice stuff....
