I have used both types but it seems modern toyotas and engines in general are very sensitive to honing patterns I have seen 20v's ringed twice by toyota and still burn oil so I would take it to a machine shop they have machines to so it that produce an even and correct cross hatch pattern.
Using a hand drill is a bit hit and miss even for experinced users.
After all there is nothing worse than a rebuilt engine that the rings wont bed in on and keep burning oil.
