3SGE responding to mods

Postby GT4 20 » Fri Jun 11, 2004 9:22 am

As someone who is completely new to the 3SGE, how does this engine respond to the 'usual' mods such as exhaust (best size?), tubular manifold, pod filter? Anything else perhaps? I see that the 3SGE in a SS II is around 180bhp - is that magical 200 possible with touching the internals? :D

They already come stock with 4-2-1 extractors but sure an aftermarket exhaust will help and same with a cold airbox/pod filter setup but I doubt you would get to 200Hp on stock cams without an aftermarket ecu of some description as the stock ecu's aren't re-programmable.
200Hp is about 120KW at the wheels and that's quite a bit for a non vvti engine on standard cams, my advice would be to buy a mivec fto or vtec prelude, both of these cars have 200Hp stock, arguably more potential in N/A form and also have a more sophisticated suspension setup than that of the celica.

I'm pretty sure Kelford cams do cams for 3SG but I could be wrong, try emailing them to find out. http://www.kelford.co.nz/
As far as ecu's go just look through any decent aussie car mag such as zoom and HPI and you will see the words Haltech, Microtech, Motec, Autronic etc etc used a lot, then all you have to do is find a suitable tuner in NZ such as turbo vehicles, gizzmo, torque performance etc.

Ah, then it starts getting expensive  I already have one highly modded car (for racing) so no point going too far with the Celica  What would you recommend to just tweek it up a bit other than the usual bits I mentioned above?

I don't actually own one so maybe some other SSII celica owners can give you some more advice additional to what you have already suggested but perhaps an enlarged throttle body will give you a few horse power.

We ran this engine in our rally Corolla.
Initially we ran it in completely std trim with a Link, an aftermarket exhaust manifold & an HKS intake which I found attached to a n/a Supra.
I think we threw on a pair of TOM'S cam pulleys as well.
This set up produced 170 hp on the dyno.

We found that by shaving the head & using a TRD gasket we could get the compression ratio to about 12.25 to 1.
Still using std pistons, cams & throttle body we got 180hp on the same dyno. Initially we were more than a little disappointed with this but then we saw the torque figures which increased by about 15%. In a rally car this is where it's all at.
In the stages the car was dynamite.

Cams were to be our next step but I sold the car before doing this.
