What engine would you like to see in an AE86?

Postby NA Drifter » Tue Nov 05, 2002 12:59 am

Well, as the topic said,
I'm thinking what engine I should put in my AE86. It going to be a drift car.
And I also want to stay way from getting the car Certify.... too much hassel... :?

Keep it N/A... I'd go with the Black Top 20V and a RWD conversion kit from Japan or USA to keep it tidy :)

I did the forced induction thing and really missed being able to rev it out.

20v!
20v!
N/A power!!
Excellent track engine, ideal for ae86 chassis, good power but not too much... High revs!!
...hole in firewall :(

But yeah as Lafro said you can get the kits ex-japan to front mount the dizzy and re-route the water lines. Personally considering the rarity and high cost of the blacktop I would stick with the silvertop ae101 engine, seeing as these are cheap (600-800) and easy to find... for a measly 5 or so hp is the blacktop really worth it? Sure you can lose the airbox and run open throttles with trumpets, but if doing a front mounted dizzy you'll have aftermarket engine management anyways... so it makes no difference.

OR you could get a redtop/bluetop and one of the mad 20v quad throttle body kits from Japan... I can hook you up with one of these if you come to want one. 8)

Some of the options listed would require a cert I think (not 100% sure)... so why not drop a 13bt  in

BlackMR2 made a good point... if money was no problem I'd go for a BEAMS 3S-GE with the matching 6 speed. However it may screw the weight distribution a bit.

That would mess up the no certification requirement though.

all the engines on his list will bolt straight in with no mount/bellhousing/driveshaft mods, so maybe simplicity is also part of the requirements?
If you're happy to do some fabrication, my suggestion would be ca18-det or sr20-det :D

Oh yeah and if the 20v is installed with standard ecu then it will need a cert for the firewall cut AFAIK.

Thanks for everyone opinion...

Yeh I though of the 3S-GE too, since my gf got SW-20 and got 3S-GE in it, and even it Auto, it still make good power, and very loud N/A induction noise when you go hard.

13Bt.. hehe I thought of that too.. brapppp... brappp.... brapp.....
but Since it going to be my everyday car too, it will cost quite abit to run it. and also hard to get a good rotary engine around here... :(

My brother is fully rebuilting his FC-3S RX7 engine, and it taking forever... nearly a year now... Having lots of trouble getting good+cheap parts for it.

CA18DET or SR20DET sound cool too. I saw in Option magazine and they have AE86 with SR20DET in it for drag racing... all running around 10second!!!!! and look very standard from outside!

Do they don't like hole at the firewall??? I can't get WOF for it?? need Cert? What happen if I make a "pan" thing for the firewall? .. like cut the firewall and weld back some plate= no hole on firewall... all to clear the dizzy.

I found black top 20v 4AGE(1995), (a swap kit) from Japan which come will all the sensor.,wires.....etc and running factory computer for 100,000 Yen which is around $1700 NZ dollar not include shipping.

That's mean I need to do something with the dizzy or to clear the firewall. Anyone know if I can get another dizzy sensor like from skyline or 4AGZE ..etc to fit on it and run the 20v factory ECU?

You can get kits off the yahoo jap auctions to run a front mounted dizzy on 20v, but they all use the Freedom ECU. As far as I know (and I looked pretty hard) there's no way you can get around the firewall hole AND keep the factory ecu.
Just do what I did and chop a hole :D the hole isn't as big as you'd think, and the main thing that clashes with the firewall isn't actually the dizzy but the fan switch and a water outlet.
I have a box to go on the inside to cover the hole... whether or not it would pass a warrant I can tell you very soon. I doubt it though, when warrant guys see a big hole where there shouldn't be one they usually get a bit suspect... but it should pass cert easy as, and cert isn't toooo expensive.
I think it pays to have one anyway for serious suspension mods and bucket seats etc.

Keith, no you can't run the heater... or if you can I haven't figured out how...
The only place I know to get frontmount dizzy kits from is in Japan, you could ring LINK in chch and see if they have any ecus that may help?
I don't have a digital camera, I'll try and borrow one to get some pics up...
The hole in my firewall is approx 300x250mm, not very big really.
