AE85 -> AE86 conversion questions, urnt help please!

Postby eightytrueno » Sun Jun 13, 2004 12:41 am

yes i have done a search... not tooo much specifics come up

just a few questions regarding this,

putting a FWD blue top 4age out of fx-gt into AE85 trueno,
changing k50 to a t50

1. Pedal box - the ae85 one doesnt look like it will line up, as hydraulic clutch conversion being done too. Is the AE86 pedal box different, and will i need this?

2. Thermostat: The thermostat on the FWD 4age is near what will be the back of the engine, as opposed to where i think it is normally located at the front - wat are the ways around this??

3. accelerator cable - use FXGT one, as 3A doesnt look long enough

thanks for the help,
ollie

can't answer the question about the pedals sorry

thermostat, i think they use a remote thermostat, all you need to do is get some metal pipe, radiator hose, and a few hose clamps to bring all the coolant lines around and to the front of the engine to the radiator, i think you can use a RWD water pump setup (if you can find one) and they have the coolant lines setup the same as the 86 which will make things easier, flick a PM off to ae85coupe he had to convert his small port redtop to rwd for his 85 a few months back, he knows how to set it all up mint.

your right 3a cable is not long enough, by about 10cm, i dont think the fxgt one will be long enough either, rip them both out and check, there is another option of using (i think, don't qoute me) a TE71 cable which works out too long but thats sweet cos you just put a gentle loop in it and it works mint

thanks for the reply pumpn, tracking down a throttle cable now, might just try buy RWD water pump new,

does anyone know about the pedal box?? it looks as if the 3A-U had been converted to manual, which is why the box doesnt look to line up, so will i need ae86 pedal box?

cheers

cant help with the pedal box would be interesting to know.
but when you buy new water pump you will only get the pump itself, what pumpN was refering to is the backing bit that houses the thermostat thats hard to find.

if u buy a genuine toyota water pump, has the back housing also
but then by doing that u haveta pretty much buy every other rwd fitting for the coolent system and alternator cos the fwd engine the alternator is bolted off the waterpump i beleive.
and rwd alternator housings are hard to find, and expensive new as i have found out.
above this is a line

shit good point about the alternator.. hm will have to see how it turns out

think we've found an ae86 pedal box so will see how that goes, although i've also heard you can $&#$% around with the ae85 box to get that to work, bit of a c**t though

Yes. You need 86 pedal box or you can just run the 85 box and keep the cable system.

Looks like most your questions have been answered, i have done this conversion a few times so let me know if you need any other info.
When you buy the genuine water pump, you can use the FWD thermostat housing which has the sensor for the elec. fan in it. If you can't get an AE86 pedal box you can use most corona/camry/corolla etc pedal boxs, if you go to a wrecker and get one, some come as just the clutch which is mint. If not you can just cut the clutch part off and use that!

AE85-86

The answer is yes the pedal boxes are different between AE85/86, I know of a few people who have done this. Ask Phil saying as he is helping you with the work, sure he has hydraulic setup on his levin. Failing that ask Nathan from Super Cheap stanmore rd what he did with his pedal box. Tell him i put you onto him (Chris)
