pipes for homemade air induction

Postby 2fas4u » Sat Jun 19, 2004 7:43 pm

hey everyone, i was thinking of getting some pipes from the local plumbing supplies to build my own forced air intake system. what i need to know is that is the pipes you get from the local pipe shops suitable for this purpose or is the melting or boiling point too low? some part of the pipe will be in the engine bay, i might also considering using heat shield material to wrap around the sections of the pipe that will be in the engine bay to keep engine heat out. what you think. by the way, it's a 90 MR2 SW20 for those who don't know. cheers.

Any old pipes are good as as long as they dont squish under intake pressure, the bigger the better and smooth on the inside not that grooved flexi stuff, pretty sure that the pipes aint gonna boil so you dont need to worry bout that. heat wrap is good, a heat shield to stop radiated heat from the engine is just as good with a cai.
:)

id be keen to see pics when ya done too, where are you gettn the ram air from, some vent?

well i was thinking of custom make a heatsheilded box for the pod filter and then also fabricate a TOM's style air scope which feeds air into the box as well as a long fat tube that goes to the front of the car with a cut up funnel at the end and with some fine mesh to prevent leaves and insects going in. will draw up and post up some pics of my ideas. feel free to make suggestions for improvement. :)

You have a side vent...utilise that instead of trying to get a little bit of air from the front of the car

you mean have a massive pipe that goes right up to the vent?

the way i would do it if you really want the scoop (i personally hate scoops) is get a alloy airbox made up for the pod, have an alloy tube run from your throttle body to your airbox you have made up which has an opening on the top for the scoop also have a tube run out to the side vent, have a little bend in it towards the front of the car

It's a bit tricky with the MR2 as you don't really want to be getting turbulant air into your intake.
Something with as little bend as possible, and sharp 90 degree turns are out of the question.
I've heard the snorkel is usually very good, however, I don't really like the looks of it. Goes against the lines of the car. But then again, thats what makes it effective :)
What I'm thinking of doing for my SW20 (Also 90 brother :D) is getting a Pipercross Viper filter. They're very cool things indeed. Expensive though.
They actually come with an air routing pipe that delivers air to the center of the cone, and has an outer case that acts like a cold air box, but goes with the lines of the filter, resulting in less turbulant air. If you wanna check it out, get in contact with Alert Engineering or check out their website, http://www.pipercross.co.nz
:)
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

yeah the tube to the front of the car would be pretty useless IMO, i mean how many metres does the air need to travel before getting to the filter?

you may get away with no bend in the pipe coming into the vent location, just suggestions

pipe's the length of the car lol, all suggestions are highly valued and taken into consideration when designing and building this project.

is there a place like Autobend in Welly mate? they could make you up your alloy tubes required for the throttle body to the airbox and from the airbox to the side vent

well down here you can take sum bendy wire into them pre bent by urself to what you want it to be and you just specify what type of material and size of piping etc and their machine bends it all for you, not press bent either so good for flow :)

under magoos in phone book here
