Weird 20v noises..

Postby strap-on » Mon Jun 21, 2004 9:11 pm

k my 20v makes a collection of weird noises and i was wondering if neone can help me figure out wat that are..

1) noisy belt:

its not squeliing, just makes a lot of noise, specially when the engine is cold, i traced it to the alternator i think.

2) sometimes weird crunching noise after ignition

sometimes when car is cold, is makes a crunching noise after it has started, similar to that made when u turn the ignition when car is already running ( not that i ever do this)

3) my car sounds like a tractor.

the head, makes a real noisy tapping sound, cn hear it from in the cabin.

so ne ideas what these noises are and how to fix?

yea my 20v also had a problem with cambelt idler made alot of noise, also i guess you could check the valve clearance could make the tapping noise. Sounds like your starter is not disengaging as above

the knocking will probably be the vvt pulley. not worth worrying about
as for the crunching..... :?

well i took it to my old work, and my old boss reckond the tapping was either tappets, or the shims, or the valve clearence, alougth he reckons toytas do that after a while, but we are changing my cam belt soon so i spose we can look then

they dont have tappets!
cam works directly on to the shims.. could be valve clearance but that wouldnt start all of a sudden. (thats what the shims do... adjust clearence)
its very common for the pulley to start knocking

they have fluid in them to dampen the knocking... it leaks...
doesnt affect the running at all.

sound travels in funny ways in engines.... it could very well be to do with valve clearances... mine does it sounds like it comes from about 1/3 of the way along the head... its the pulley in mine

no its a sealed unit. for the price of the pulley just best to ignore it!
however u say you can hear it from inside the car.... if its the pulley you will probably only hear it at idle....
