i beleave there is bugger all diffrence just that one sort you have arrows on the tyres pointing the rotation and they have to go that way so thats the directional ones, and the others are normal, to me rubber is rubber

Generally speaking the directional tyres wud probably be better as the direct water etc.... away from the centre of the tyre providing more grip. Although the effetivness of this depends on the quality of the tyre.

With non directional tyres you can rotate them to anywhere on the car for even wear, they're generally cheaper than directionals too.

other than that Directional tyres have the benefit of better water displacement, more grip, and usually less road noise.

If your comparing similar types of tyre, i.e. quality, compound, size, etc then directionals are generally better as the others said. I have some fairly soft directionals and the kick ass.

Tread clearing

Postby 1eyed » Thu Jun 24, 2004 11:38 am

Directional tyres originally were designed to clear mud and rocks more
easily out of the tread. Directional road tyres operate on the same principle,
they shed water more easily than non-directionals, and so are less likely
to hydroplane. Take look at the treads, channels lead away from the squish
area, usually in a straight-ish unimpeded line, directing water out to the side
instead of out in front.

Asymmetric tyres are another matter.

riight, yep mostly you want grip. the thing with spitting water out, is if it isnt being directed out the sides, you may be getting it in your face, not nice.

interesting note, if you have directionals on the front, non directionals on the rear, the rear will aqua-plane badly, they basically ride on the "wake" kicked up from you r front tyres.

well, basically directional tyres are better for preventing aquaplating.

i suggest get directional tyres more expensive but the handling is so good,

in my celica i have two diff brands, gt radial champiros directional and the cheapest budget kumho performance, which is also directional but isnt has good, you notice the difference

if you dont mind spending money and dont driv eyoru car everyday, get goodyear gsd3 tyres, they are best value for money

well no

Postby TRDmod » Thu Jun 24, 2004 1:02 pm

depends, the gsd3 is a slight5ly harder comppund a good every day driver, but cheaper tyres are not as good because the compound used is harder, less grip but better wearing.

if you dont mind spending money, i suggest you get the brdigetone potenza s03, grid 3 or the new ones that is a asymetrical design, hardcore fancy at 520 a pop, i would never do that because i would rather get semi slicks for that price, but...for road use, its very good

the grid 3s are exceptional i have used them before but...they are slightly softer hence dont last as long, but, gsd3 are a good comprimise and should last a while, with optimal grip and wet weather handling

well, depends

Postby TRDmod » Thu Jun 24, 2004 5:23 pm

Depends what you are doing with the car, if its something I have researched its tyres I still ask about engine stuff but tyres, what I found was using good tyres on one side and bad on the other is not a good idea, but depends what you use it for

Drag cars put the good tyre on the driving tyres, either from or back, 4x4 drag cars do all obviously.

On the raod depends what you want to achieve, lets say on heavy rain, then the car wants to slightly slide out, because of your good rear tyres, you get better control…but the front tyres which si responsible for steering aquaplates…then your in trouble, cos its inconsistent, so, basically, having good tyres at the back is pretty much nullified by the fact that you cant harness that because your fronts are not as good, though of course its better than having both bad, but at the same time its also a catch 22,

On track, as I have seen some ppl do, I went against a tyre r integra, they are fast, light cars, I was beating him only ever so slightly, but after 5 laps, he lagged further and further…why? Because his front tyres rae great, his back ones are budget ones, and heat up and started to melt, literally couldn’t turn a corner half the speed he did after the first few laps…

Consistency is the way to go, unless its for dragging, then it’s a straight line, you want just good traction, you don’t need good brakes, or anything, all you need is power and the initial traction pretty much

I suggest to get 4 good or 4 tyres of the same quality so you get to know your car better and judge it correctly not having the false confidence in them.

Ok thanks, the tyres were on the car when i brought it. Thinking about that i might put the Gt radials up front, as steering is quite important and being a RWD having the cheaper tyres on the rear might be a good idea.

especially for drifting:) i found that when i went to pukekohe, better tyres up front was advantageous.

Toyrotamota refer to blitza's post , if you only have 2 directional tyres then they should be on the back outherwise you could cayse your car to aquaplane from the rear :D
