KE35 engine transplant? 4age 20v or 3sge (1995 style) ??????

Postby R15 » Thu Jun 24, 2004 10:06 pm

what exactly is involved in doingeither of these two swaps, i was thinking the 3sge is possible cheaper than the 4age to buy due to it not being so popular and i also like the way the 3sge's vvt kicks in quite hard compared to the 4age, ive owned a 20v Levin and currently have a 3sge EXiV, and im trying to do up my KE35 and make it quick in the process.

so my quesions are , how had to wire up? (assuming i have the computer etc for the motor in question)?

what gearbox will i need?

what adaptors etc will i need?

what other stuff will i need to do or get?

thanx in advance to anyone that is of any help.

btw the ke35 is curently 'equipped' with a 3k h b

i've seen a 3SGE sitting in a RA29 engine bay (old school celica, heaps bigger engine bay) and it was a close fit in there, without the intake stuff going over the top he could only just close the bonnet. i'm not sure if he ever got it on the road.

there is a bellhousing around for W series gearboxes to go on but they are fairly rare (think they only came out on one of the early 80s diesels but do a search, there's a post around somewhere about this, i think it was from shotgun in the for sale section) which puts the price up a bit.

i'd say that putting a 3SGE in there would take a lot more time, money and fabrication to do whereas a 4AGE has been done many times so its easy to find out the problems and solutions. also if you found it wasn't enough power then there's plenty of parts out there for turbo conversions as well.

up to you though, 3S's are doable and would be a lot less common. might have to cut firewall/crossmember and stuff

cheers
Matt

ok either swap, u will need mounts wheter they be custom or sourced from something.

they diff wont handle much for very long so the likes of an ae86 or hilux rear end would be needed,

for either engine you'd be best spending a lil extra and running a w series gearbox,

it would be a good idea to upgrade the brakes, convert the arse end to disk, if you can get an ae86 rear diff axle assembly they usually have them,
as for the front im not sure what is a good swap but there would be plenty of options available

to put a 20v in the ke35, you would want mounts, i find its just easier to custom make than hunt around for some that would fit.
gear box mounts
custom headers,
modify the dizzy and fire wall,
bell housing from nite b to bolt up to a w series box.
then theres wiring, radiator and plumbing

there is a shit load
if your actually serious and not just a dreamer, best thing is to buy the engine, gearbox and bell housing adaptor wiring ecu etc and go from there.

I think Supra's had the W series box but for the cost of the 4A - W bell housing (according to the one on TradeMe) you might be better off just getting a T50 (if you can find one) depending on how hard you are going to drive it.

Yup. T50s also come out in other rwd 80's Toyotas so its not only the ae86.

but for the cost of having to replace a t50 its worth spending the xtra and buying the bellhousing for the w series box,

they w series came from early celicas, coronas, supras
you can pick them up any were from $100 to $600

were as some of the t50's advertised lately have been around $550
