A BOV will lessen performance in a variety of ways:
1. When it vents, you are losing metered air which makes your un very rich (notice the black cloud you often see as you hear the noise).

2. Since all but one have a spring, they respond slower than the OEM air based design

3. Since they have a spring, they only have an "ideal" range of boost they can be set for. The OEM valve works perfectly regardless of psi ... more importantly it works exactly the same regardless of psi.

4. NO aftermarket valve has the by-pass feature the OEM has. This gives you faster response and greater fuel economy.


This was in relation to the 3sgte. What you guys reckon? Aftermarket blowoffs just rice for posers or an integral part of any performance engine.[/quote]

As long as your motor is from a MR2 theres no need for a aftermarket BOV.

The OEM one is the best avail. Bar none.

It is from a st185 celica. Same deal? I don't want a blingy one anyway, I was just curious, everyone gets one and they aren't good for your engine?

It wont have a bov then afaik. flygt4's st185 didnt have one im not sure about all of them tho

the only st185 with a bov r aftermarket :D the only possible place to fit one wuld be on the s shaped curved pipe from the turbo to intercooler.and that spots bout an inch long. :( looked at doing it on my st185 and it really aint worth the hassle. i looked at 5 or 6 st185s wen i was looking for mine and none had them. they r helpful to prevent compressor surge , which will eventually damage the turbo , but u shuldnt get too much anyway til ur over 13psi.which u shuldnt really b running on a ceramic anyway :wink:

It was just a general thing about the benefits and disadvantages of having a BOV.

I running standard everything 'cept pod. (that's when it's going of course... fukn waiting for some ramps cos i only got stink scissor jack and don't trust those $&#$%)

a few tips for ya. unbolt the old engine complete with gearbox and drop it on the floor, then jack the car up and drag the engine out. also remove the brace from the back off the intake manifold down to the block and grind or sand the castings off the intake. (thats if your engine has this brace. mine did but it was from a mr2)

I pretty sure the ST185 that i'm thinkig of had a factory BOV.
Iremember cause we had problem with it not letting the car run high boost properly. They have a small bypass vent up through the side of them that limits there function.
Dont remember where it was located on the car but is was gey unpainted and round, about 50-60mm dia?

Thanks dude but I not game enough to do this myself without some supervision :oops: me good at breaking things. So getting it done by my work, sure it's gonna cost me but at least it'll have a gaurantee. Although after reading your post... Ripping the engine out myself will save me a couple hundy... might see what my mates doing tomorrow. It will be towable without engine gearbox? (cept for brakes?) I just very new to all this. Wires and music I can handle, scary things scare me :(

all you do is once you have removed the front shafts, put the disks back on along with the wheels and you should be sweet to move around and have it mobile via a tow rope ;)

ST185's never came with a BOV. The place most have it is before the cooler on the some-what S-bend before the cooler after the turbo. This requires having a T-Pipe kinda thing welded to the S-Kinda pipe.

oh also biggie ups for asking questions and actually doing it 8)

Yup, listen to Oizo, ST-185s dont have BOVs, and dont really need em.
Why? Because the AFM flapper acctually prevents compressor surge to a fair degree, it only opens inwards.
Plus if you do get a BOV, it will need to be a plumb back or %50 plumb back type, else statement #1 of the first question is very true
