Bump stops?

Postby aesc » Wed Jul 07, 2004 11:08 pm

Hi,

The problem is that ive tried to get my Levin lower in the front twice now by getting the springs compressed but it hasnt done anything and im starting to get really annoyed.
The question is, are the bumpstops causing my car not to go any lower? I suppose if the springs were causing the shocks to sit on the bumpstops originally before i got the springs compressed then it wouldnt drop any lower, right? Or wrong?

Where do the bumpstops actually sit in relation to the shock? and how do you 'extend the bump stops'?

Damn this suspension stuff, it completely baffles me! :?

As soon as you touch the bumpstops you need to get the car certified.

the bump stop sits on the shaft of the shock. it will be hiding under the dust boot. if u wanna know if the cars sitting on it u need to get it on a 4 post hoist of pver a pit. get under the car and pull up the dust boot. if u can slide the bump stop up and down u still have some room. u need to leave some room for compression of course.
meh.....

youll know straight away if your car is on the bump stops.. it will be the worst handling thing on the road!!
and will be extremly dangerous

Ok well it cant be on the bumpstops then, it handles quite well and is definitely not dangerous. They are standard Jamexs in the front FYI, not cut or played around with previously.

Thanks for your explanation too JRS.

cool, cause if its on the stops youll have virually no suspension travel.. sounds like its time to get the struts shortend if you wanna go lower....

I think ill just leave it how it is. Im not that keen on getting my fronts shortened. If i had to replace them it would sting me big time

What I meant was as soon as you modify the bump stops you need a cert. And you can get a car certified with shortened bumpstops, definitely notr if your sitting in them though.

just chop out a coil. Contrary to popular belief, this can be done safely.

with chopping a coil out the spring is shaped to sit in the top hat
as showen in the picture below
Image
it means that insted of sitting flat in the top hat it sits all over the show because its not right in the top hat

I completely agree. I have done this in the back of mine and if you get them retentioned and shocks shortened etc theres nothing dodgy about it.

badidas, your right how the spring wont sit in the tophat, but theres only really a moulding for the coil to sit in at the bottom of the strut, not the top so it doesnt really matter too much. (well in my car anyway)
