info on 3tgteu swap

Postby dohca » Mon Jul 05, 2004 8:46 pm

Hey all

seeing as no ones interested in my celica i thought id take the engine out and swap it into my already repowered tt141 corona

it orginally had a 3t engine and now has a 3teu

i have the whole ta63 celica for parts.

just wondering if the 3tgteu is any larger in size than the 3t or 3teu width wise.

also the turbo width etc.

Cheers

Was a factory option for the TT142 (I think it was 2), so should all bolt straight in. Should be able to swap the whole front crossmember, struts, bigger brakes etc over with no probs. Major difference in the shells is the rear end with the turbo Corona's running the F code IRS so the rear floorpan is very different.

Yep, front crossmember should be a bolt in with struts, brakes, the lot. Rear end won't go near fitting, whole floorpan is different.

i thought the crossmember's would be exactly the same??? 3T's, 3TGEU's, and 3TGTEU's all use the same block/mounts and since the struts and other stuff aren't bolted directly to the crossmember i can't see why you'd need to swap it.

besides that it should be an easy swap as long as you don't mind working the wiring out, should be pretty simple if you can just park the cars next to each other and swap everything straight over. that said i did the same thing with my lancer conversion AND labelled everything as i did it and there's still things i'm not dead sure about. have to see if it runs once i sort out a fuel pump for it.

for the brakes you'd need to swap the struts, not the crossmembers. as long as they've got the same pattern for the top mount and the same bolt spacing at the bottom where they bolt onto the steering knuckle they should just swap straight over. otherwise you might need to change your steering knuckles which means finding ones with the right size ball joints. turns into a mission but i've got a few different sized sets around if you're in auckland and want to try them out.

cheers
Matt

The easiest way to do the swap is unbolt crossmember, box, suspension, steering and lift the car off. Roll it back and drop the other car onto it and bolt it back together. Then you don't need to dick around with the struts, brakes etc as it all stays complete. Just do some measuring to confirm it will all swap over.

I dumped a 3T-GEU out of that model Corona into an SR coupe. Then found a 3T-GTEU, & I was told that the engine mount under where the turbo poked out had to be moved somehow to allow the turbo to fit???

You need the right mount to let the oil drain from the turbo to reach the sump. You most likely had mounts made to suit the K series crossmember, rather than modding the crossmember to suit the engine.

sorry guys.........We chopped the mounts off the SR so there were no mounts. We then weilded 2 kinda small plates where the previous mounts sat. & then weilded the 3T mounts from the Corona (3T-GEU) on top of the plates. The plates didnt sit any further than where the 4K mounts did, it was only incase if we had any play.
I never got the 3T-GTEU sitting in the engine bay.
I know its a little off-topic, but I remember somebody saying about that mount under the turbo.

just finished doing it

the turbo side mount has to have the oil drain pipe running throught it so you ether need to ether
1. use origanal mount for that side
2. modify oul return pipe to clear it
3.make oil return pipe go to sump and block off hole in block

I just finshed F**KING with the oil return on my TA63 Carina its a prick of a job but wat i ended up doin was gettin a right angle copper bend and 10cm of silicone/rubber oil piping from Alert Engineering that did the trick. But even if the original concertenerd pipe fits replace it very prown to corosion.
