4K Powaaa!

Postby RS13 » Mon Jul 19, 2004 1:37 am

As searching for info on these bad boys seems fruitless, and I have little experience with older carby pushrod motors, I have a couple of questions.

I've just purchased a (what I assume to be, as I haven't run it yet!) tired 4K to replace the 2K in the Starship, and don't want to junk the 2K if I can transplant bits off it.. the 4K is from the last of the KP's, it seems to have a LOT of vacuum/emissions crap on it, and an A/C pump.

a) Would there be much point putting the 2K head on the 4K?

b) I had intended using manifolds/carb/dizzy off the 2K, as I don't want to piss around with the vacuum gear.. does anyone forsee any issues with that?

c) First mods? (aside from a rebuild!)

d) I also read somewhere a while ago that the factory weber carb found in 1300cc Escorts was a good cheap upgrade.. is it? If so, how much would I need to alter the manifold to suit? Would this carb be better than the 4k-b twincarb setup?

e) What early K-series cars would I be able to source a 5 speed box from? And would it bolt in, or require fabrication of new mounts?

Obviously, I'm not looking for WRX-beating performance, just something I can enjoy on a day to day basis.. that doesn't top out at 125km/h!

Cheers in advance! :D

only use the 2k head if you want 11 million to one compression, nah seriously it makes it about 12:1 or something ridiculous, the 2k head is probably the best bet, with a bit of a port and polish, I have acess to a adapter plate for a weber (redline brand or something a rather) and ported head (not excatly sure what it is, but if your interested i can ask my mate if he wants to get rid of them, which he probably will as he no longer has a k motored starlie.

Cheers

from what ive found you cant go pasts a decent set of cams. ive got 265deg cams in my 4k, wich seem to go alrite.
The dizzy from your 2k will go into the 4k no probs, also ne k50 box aslong as its of a k series engine will bolt in your starlet, but i think thers a few difrecnecs with the gear stick. i got a 5spd out of a liteace van and that bolted in fine.
I wouldnt recomend using the origanl manifolds mainly because their cheap cast jobbies with f*ck all performance benifits

hope it helps

ye i agree with what has been said so far, if ya can find them the twin carbs are ok maybe jet them a little or as you said and a mate did it on the 5k i sold him a down draft weber off an 1600 sposrt escort and a local guy made an adapter plate and fitted and tuned it for him for cheap cheap, i can find out who if need be, as far as gearbox goes starly 5 speed are gettin rare and expensive considering the 4speeds can be picked up for nothing, a carrolla one will fit but is slightly longer so yo need to cut the hole in the floor a little longer and the gear stick will come through a little further back which is what we did after not being able to find another startlet box
If you drink, and drift,
your a bloody lunatic

Don't bother with the 2K head, as the valves are pretty pathetically sized...either plane the 4K head or use a 3K-b head.
If you do go with either of those head options, you'll need a bigger carb (either twin carbs from an SR coupe or a Weber of some description) and go with a big nasty cam...the bigger the better!
If you do use a really big cam, you'll need to uprate your valve springs...I've heard of people using 202 Holden 6 cylinder valves, but haven't done it myself. Cheap as chips anyway.

After all that, you'll probably be making 70 odd hp  cam spec dependant, and you'll probably break diffs and gearboxes with the newfound power

OMG so shiny!
