Do I have a problem - 20v oil consumption

Postby endless_punk » Mon Jul 19, 2004 11:40 pm

Hey there, well I have recently bought a 20V Levin and it seems to be using a fair bit of oil. Its got Magnatec in it at the moment could that be the problem e.g being too thin??
What oil do you recommend I use when I get its next oil change.
Thanx alot guys

do u know what grade of oil u are using? this gets asked HEAPS

i use 15/40 or even 20/40 and it STILL eats oil, not very much but enough, basically these engiens are bastards for it, thrashing from cold doesnt help either.

how many k's has it done?

meh mine uses oil like a hardcore stoner, i've got over it, just use 15w40. I did try 20w50, but it was too thick, creating problems with the lifters when cold 8O If you keep changing every 5000km or so you should be right.

Oh and hes right. Do NOT thrash from cold. shouldnt do this to any engine mind...

Common prob with 4AGE's.

15W40 good.

Just top it up every now and then unless it is ripping thru like half your oil in two weeks sorta thing . . .

my blacktop 20v came with fresh oil from the dealer at 99,000K's, its now done 109,000 and I changed the oil last weekend, the oil level was still on the full mark before i drained it out, have checked it about 4 times since i got the car and never had to top it up.

Am I just lucky or what?

It had cheap ole Castrol Protec 15w40 in it, I put in cheap ole Valvolene 15w40.

Nah, i rebuilt my blacktop engine a few months back, replaced rings blah blah, and i replace oil every 10,000k's, dont need to top up in that time. So maybe replace the rings, its cheap and easy to do and see what its like then.
Well yeah thats my 2 c worth

Can I ask how much this costed you?

Also does replacing rings improve your engine performance a little if it is on highish KMs? (no money for rebuild  )

have you tried a synthetic oil - they apparently last longer. but always change the oil sooner than toyota recommends anyway :)

The oil is use is 15/40. No doubt you guys no bout Magnatec. It seems better now, when I last checked it it was just after my move from Hawkes Bay down to Welly. So I guess that explains a little bit why I went through a bit of oil. Now my new problem is I think I got a radiator leak  . Ahhh the joys of owning a car aye??
Thanx for the help guys :)

Hmmm i havent worked out the cost for the rebuild for a few reasons. I got most of the parts at trade costs, through contacts which was a huge help!! secondly I did all the work with the big help of a mate so didnt pay any money for labour + time and thirdly i spent a lot more more than i needed due to modifications i did to the engine while it was in pieces. So due to this i cant tell you either if the rings made much of a difference to the performance as i had a massive gain with the mods i did. However before i did the rings the car would blow a large amount of smoke, and with the new rings theres dam all smoke.
