4K in a EP-71(??)

Postby jamesbissland » Tue Jul 27, 2004 10:34 pm

Hey All,
For the purposes of racing in a 0-1300cc class, has anyone put a 4K into a Ep-71 Starlet?
I've been told that if you were to build up one of the toyota 1300cc engines for racing, the 4K would be the one to go for?

What is everyone's thoughts?

Cheers,
James

Tempting, very tempting.

Do some research, the 4k won't quite fit.

You need to look at the E series motors.

Even if it were practical to make it fit, there's no advantage in using a 4k over a 2E.
2E is a good engine & there have been many raced and rallied in NZ.

Probably the best option for this application though, if you want to change engines, would be the Suzuki 1300 DOHC unit.
Another engine worth consideration is the Echo 1300cc engine which looks like it bolts up to a C52/C56 gearbox.

ye dude a rwd engine in a fwd setup would be alot harder thatn it sounds. not just engine fitment, but driveline aswell. I say stick with the 2e, much similar, performance wise, to the 4k.

I always thought the 2E's were a little on the shy side of responding to mods (?) - or should I say compared to the 4K.
Well that has solved that question!
The Echo engine you say...Hmm....vvti
I had a Buget rental Echo about a year ago for 2 weeks, and I must say it went really hard!! Good solid hand brake on it too! -ya know, for parking on those steep hills ;)
What's the engine code for one of those bad boys?
Anyone know factory stats for it?

Cheers

What about a blacktop 20v head onto a 2A block. 1300cc 20V?

may need custom piston for valve clearance etc.
Dont know if it's been done or is possible but..............

Don't see why it wouldn't, the 16 valve head fits.

yeah the '2age' has been done before, with quite a bit of sucsess i beleive. would be an interesting way to do it. would probably have more power then either a 4k or 2e

Are you for real?

What would the set up be? cams, C/R etc?

About the 4K...
I was talking to a guy at work who used to work for Giltrap's, and he said the 4K will fit in fine to the EP-71, and it will mate up perfect to one of the toyota FWD gear box...Cant remember exactly what one tho.

Yeah, that could be an option, or I could just go for a whole 4E-FE I guess.
Would the 5E head have bigger valves than the 4E (just thinking 1300 vs 1500)
Going n/a, bigger valves would alway have to be the better way to go.
