cam belts vs chains

Howdy, ive got a sr20 powered wagon (yeah, it aint a toyota, but ae has pride in the garage :wink: ) anyway i asume its chain drivin as apossed to cam belts, just want to know abit about them, like cam blets should be changed every 100k , what about chains? do they need replacing or do they last alot longer?

Indeed the SR engines are chainbelts and you shouldn't have to change them at all :)
Gotta keep the chain covers (What you'd normally call a cambelt cover) on, as its sealed to prevent atmospheric changes (moisture content etc) doing damage to the chain and the chain lube.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

but chains are significantly louder than belts on some cars tho..

The SR's seem to be good though. It's only something you'd notice if you were keeping an ear out for it.

just a heads up before you start tweeking the sr20 get a new sump
they tend to run big end bearings because the oil washes away from the pick up with increased g forces

I personally prefer belt driven over chains, if you ever need to remove the cam chain at any stage you will know how much of a c**t of a job it is rather than just slipping off a belt... :roll:

cheers, though ill keep the tweek'n to the 4agze, but then, sometimes its abit hard to keep things standard,
and i dont think theres too much worry about g-forces with the wagon :wink:

But yeah, i know what u mean, ill be doing that with my 4a next time its out

sidenote - never broken a belt, but I've snapped a chain (extreme conditions) LMAO

had a belt brake on me, bent a valve too :( but was just a old cheapie no was no biggie

yeah i guess theres always pro's and cons of differant systems

At least with an SR you ain't gonna need to remove the chain for much, other than camshafts.
