dash warp

Postby Andy from the block » Fri Aug 06, 2004 8:09 pm

hey I have warped dash on my levin where the vents are near the windshield. I hear its a common problem.

i saw this japanese DIY site with the same problem
http://homepage2.nifty.com/levin-s_garage/defroster.html
but I dont understand exactly what they are doing to fix it.
I think they bought a plastic vent thingy that slotted into the old vents that was able to push the dash back into shape?
Where can u get these?

cheers.

By the looks of the pic's, its a fatter and slightly wider vent so it covers and pushes the warped studd down.
I have no idea where you could get any, but if you had moderate fibreglassing skills you could customise existing ones to do it...it'd be a bit of work though...
Cant believe im still a member here.

There are some part numbers at the bottom of the page, specifically

55981 - 12090 - CO
55982 - 12080 - CO

According to another webpage these are toyota part numbers so i assume they are vents from another toyota which will fit. I've got the same problem so i'll follow it up tomorrow.

ditto problem on my levin, it took me ages to work out what had happened, i thought someone previous to me had been keen and taken off the whole dash and put it back crooked! (until i was told otherwise)
tureno; will be keen to hear what you source....
my side vents on the top are warped too so any details on those would be helpful...

Yip, my dash has done it too.

Maybe Mr Revhead can give us some insight into those numbers and maybe a price for them too.

It's a common problem on alot of cars. Land Rover Discoveries are the worst affected, the dash's lift really badly. The easiest way if you don't want large vents sticking out or if it has lifted too much is to glue it back down. Get some ados 2 pac adhesive and the flexible tube, take the vents out obviously and squirt under the lifted part of the dash. (Try not to get any down the vents! ) Wipe any extra glue up and shove heaps of newspaper between the windscreen and the dash to hold it down. Let it set for the required time, take the newspaper out and put your exsiting vents back in place.

the issue in doing that is the foam expands and makes it a bitch to hold down at the right flush level.... and to keep it there while drying... I wouldnt try lifting any of it unless ya gona re-cover the whole dash

Trust me, I've seen it done many a time. My old man is a car trim repairer :)

I don't get what you are saying about recovering the whole dash tho. You just lift the edge up a little and bend the flexible tube under the lifted part of the dash and squirt the glue in. You shove newspaper between the dash and the windscreen to hold it down while the glue sets.

sheesh that engrish gave me a head ache :?

i can do those vents for around $50-70 each. one of those numbers is in stock the other ex japan.
they mention the sv33, so maybe these parts come from one of those. next time sumones hanging around a wreckers maybe they should have a look at one.

my levin has a dashmat which covers that problem on mine, i was gunna take it off but the glare off the dash is just stupid so iv left it on
