AE101 headlights - changing amber foglamps to white...

Postby aesc » Fri Aug 06, 2004 6:36 pm

As you all probably know ae101s have amber foglamps within the headlight.

I have had a bit of a look and it looks like only the bulb fits into an amber encasing within the headlight. So can I open up the headlight and remove the amber encasing to get a white colour from the foglight? If so, how do I go about taking apart the headlight, anyone got any tips? And if i remove the amber encasing, with it effect the direction of light coming from the headlamp? Has anyone done this? I havent seen it done on a 101 down here in chch

Cheers

The simple but crude way is to carefully smash the amber filter  and remove the broken glass without opening the unit.

The other way is really difficult is to remove the clips that hold the lens to the back off the unit, gently bake (about 100 degrees C??) the unit to soften the glue that seals the lens to the back, then carefully pry the lens off, remove the amber filter, re-heat the back and from, squeeze the two together, and put the clips back on. There was a page detailing this out there, don't have the URL to hand though...

PS haven't done this myself...YMMV, IANAM etc

Yeah I did think about just smshing the amber bit but then im not sure how you would remove all the pieces from within the headlight. And the broken glass could damage the reflectors within it too.

100 deg C? Thats seems a bit hot! I might get hold of a heat gun and try that when ive got some time.

Ok well im probably going to get the headlights opened up by someone to remove the amber filter and get them polished at the same time.

Ive been looking at replacing the foglamp bulbs with a HID look H3 bulb but the thing is standard bulbs (H3) are 35W and the HID are 55W. So is it safe to run a higher wattage bulb as they will draw more current? It wont burn out my wiring will it?

I did a few calcs and the 35W bulbs draw about 2.9 amps while the 55W bulbs will draw 4.6 amps. Is this a significant increase in current considering its only for foglights?

Have a quick check of the wires. Here's a good diagram to help you out:

I'd say you should be fine using the current wiring :)

just make sure the plastic housing/lense can take the xtra heat of more power... the small spots on ae101 trueno's are 35w... put a 55w in and ya start geting black heat spots in the lense.

Cheers JT. Ill take your word for it, but if I burn it out ill track you down

Is this from personal experience? I cant see a problem from extra heat as the main headlight bulb is 55W also. although in saying that, the foglight bulb is closer to the lense that the main headlight bulb.

Cool, will do JDogg. Do you have a 101 also? Looks like ive got some 5250K bulbs lined up so they should give that HID look. PM me if you wanna get rid of your ambers too, ive just done it.

yea im not sure about a levin as its part of the headlight the trueno ones are in the bumper and its another sort of plastic I think... my old ones got heat spots in them from the 35watt so 55 would prolly melt sumthen, think a levin should be ok... but if you leave that yellow filter in they will prolly melt that... keep the 35watt bulbs they are impossable to get hold of.... toyota told me there wasnt such a thing till I showed them... then found one for $50

oh ok i get ya, yeah id say the bulb would be quite close to the lense in the bumper fogs on a Trueno, hence the cause of black marks...

Na i have removed that amber filter so that cant be melted

Impossible to get hold of, really! I thought they are just a standard H3 bulb. I will be holding onto them though, for warrants etc if need be.

yea... H3's are the same but 55watt no one knows what a 35watt H3 is toyota told me to goto nissan and ask lol... they didnt know... visited a ton of places hunting them.
an yea I think it should be fine in a levin... more air space in there and its prolly the better plastic been the headlight... on the trueno its small an plastic that dosnt like heat. just dont put the 100watt bulbs in... melt down! lol
