Regular spare or Space Saver?

Postby Adamal » Wed Jun 02, 2004 10:53 pm

Which do you have?
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Yep.... normal kind of tyre for me!

In my case, my spare is an original metric rim from the car, measure 340mm in diameter, somewhere in between a 13" and a 14" and it even has a 21 year old Michelin MXV 190/50 tyre on it....

My opinion: Space savers = Bloody dangerous.

Bear in mind space savers are only designed for getting to a garage to get your puncture fixed etc and you cant go faster than 80km'h on them, if you drive on one normally you really are stupid and deserve to die

Space Savers are 'limp home' jobs, just as B1NZ says. The longest I drove on mine was a week, while I found the money to sort my tyre out (needed a whole new one, and it wasnt a pay week that week...)

That said my driving consisted of work-and-back, and very little else.

Respect their relative capabilities and theyre fine. DONT keep em on there and drive like its your actual wheel.

Heh in my current car my space saver is 14" and my car runs 15"s... I havnt needed to run the spare yet but I certainly wont be doing it for very long if it comes necessary :P

I got a puncture on Saturday night and had to wait till Monday for tyre shops to open... :? it was really funny seeing my car sitting on a real funny angle (one 14" or 15" space saver on the back, rest being my normal 17" wheels)

Er... given that this is illegal behavior, why not ban the driver, instead of a device designed to be an 'emergency spare' and at the same time save boot space?

I cant fit a full wheel in my spare-well in my boot, i dont want to carry a full spare, so I respect the intention (and the law) around space savers.

my Opinion: Space Savers = Burnout tyres (for all 20 seconds of fun that they provide before they pop).

Hey man, you need some real stuff not some plastic spare, which you are most likely to udnersteer, crash and die.. you shold have some performance spare just like your other tyres..

my car runs 16's, but my space savers 17", people say i need bigger wheels...too bad that one is thin, orange and ugly.

i wouldn't feel safe at all driving with one at the back...especially if it was wet, its about half the width of my normal tyre, hmmm not a lot of grip i wouldn't think.

It'd look funny with you driving down the street with a big sub strapped on where your wheel should be :D
