knocking/clicking noise confusion

Postby celica_tommo » Tue Aug 03, 2004 5:58 pm

I recently converted my st-182 celica from auto to a manual. It's now running an st-206 curren LSD gearbox but I've run into some trouble with a clicking/clunking noise when the wheels are turning... here's the characterstics of the noise:

1) Sounds like a muffled clicking kind of noise (thats why I assumed it must be a cv joint)

2) Seemed to be coming from around the front right wheel initially, now I'm not so sure

3)I am pretty sure it is louder when turning

So what I have done so far is to get a new right side outer cv joint... noise is still there... I've jacked up thecar and spun the wheels and turned the steering wheel etc... no sound. Nothing seems to be interfereing with the driveshafts.

Could this be something to do with the wheel bearings?... or my haynes manual suggests maybe differntial gear noise (I know that the donor car was in an accident that involved the right side driveshaft/cv joint being ripped out of the inner joint)

Any ideas, just post them up

I've taken that apart and put it back together (looked alright) with new grease... driveshaft bearing possibly but I wouldnt think that would be clicking sound

its quite possible that its still the cv even thou you re-greased it. Sometimes they can still look sweet as but be work enough to click. Happened to me on my old levin. It was a little quiter when I re-greased it, but still worn enough to make some noise.

Still unsolved... changed the inner cv joint (the inside bits, the cv joint housing looked in good condition)

I'm just gonna drive it round now and I guess something will either break or I will be able to work out what makes the sound louder/different and eventually diagnose it

yep definately is..... This is the situation now, I took it out for a good drive tonight and noise is only there when I turn corners. It's not really proportional to the number of rotations of the wheel and I think it's louder and more common at low speeds.

Haynes manual says:

Knocking noise at low speeds - worn side gear shaft centerbore in differential case

Noise most pronounced when turning - Differential gear noise

yeah it's got fluid in it.. not sure if it is exectly the right stuff though... but still if it was the wrong stuff or too little of it i would probably expect a whinning or moanig noise rather than this cracking/clicking noise

It seems to be related to suspension for example it will usually click when i go over a bump and it definately clicks more when i am turning.

I am leaning towards concluding that it is a diffential problem based on the fact that i know that the outer cv joints are in good condition... the thing is I actually do have a spare gearbox... Anyone know how difficult it is to open up the box and swap over diffs?

Wouldn't it be easier just to chuck the whole box on?

.....just a question, when you are turning and the clicking sound comes in....when you step on the clutch, does the sound go away? if so, we might have the same problem which i dont know too.

This sounds like the problem ive got at the moment. Its a muffled clicking noise, it kinda sounds like its coming from the front left but not sure. Mine only makes it when the throttle is on dead even when cruising; so not accelerating or decelerating. But yeah seems to get a little louder when turning at around 20-30kmh (like roundabouts) and the noise seems proportional to speed. Its the loudest in 2nd and 3rd gears, but can hardly hear it in 4th and 5th. Pretty sure its not the outter CV cos if you turn hard and accelerate there is no noise. Im thinking inner CV, but i dont know.

I am pretty sure it was the diff now... put a standard non-lsd box in

ok so now I've got a standard gearbox in it is still doing it to a lesser degree :? ... now my best guess is that I'm not distributing the cv grease around the joint enough (then it should go away over time). I really dont know :?:

Just got a WOF with it... so it's nothing suspension wise that is obviously loose
