is it safe to hit this with a hammer??

ON A 4A-GE BLUETOP....
u know that front cover/seal that bolts on to the front of the block, and the crank pulleys sit just infron ov this...

well the crank pulley is off and now all ive got is the cam belt (crank) pulley.
with the pulley bolt out the crankshaft and front pulley off, with the cambelt (crank pulley) now slide off??
the end ov the crankshaft, that the pulleys sit on, is quite coroded so its stubborn.

ive already taken the front cover/seal bolts out and the only way i can think is to force the pulley off by taking at the cover with a rubber hammer.

so will this pulley just come off, or am i forgetting something.

for pictures ov it, click below

some idiot spot welded the crankshaft so the pulleys wouldnt fall off

now i have too file the whole end to get the pulley off.

thats rough

u think the keyway is "bonded" to the pulley?
Coz i think the pulley wants to move but not in a hurry
i gonna file the crank end down today coz i think the corrosion, and the spot welds are the main reason she dont wanna move.

But yea the big end journals on crank are scratched anyway.
(I found 2 forreign big end shells on piston no.2!! 8O 8O )

REDTOPS have higher compression (10:1 i think...)
BLUETOPS have like 9.4 or sum. What determines compression change in 7 rib blocks?

coz if its the crankshaft throws, i could switch to a redtop crank.

from what ive seen the cranks both have the same Big End Diameter
and crank journal diameter and same bore/stroke so it would have to be head design that bumps the comression from 9.? top 10.3
so in conclusion youd make nil power benifits from a red top crank

oh well. thats cool. I got TRD main, and big end shells and ARP's for big end on the way.
might pay to replace the crank ay. The front pulley had to massive cracks init too 8O

yea that cam belt pulley should just slide off with the aid of a screw driver I have a spare crank from a 7-rib if you are interested. I think its the piston/head design that gives the compression not the crank

Take it easy with the leverage on those, they can crack the skirt at the back if smacked hard enough or levered the wrong way.

Maybe get an engine shop to get it off for you, or get a gear puller. I haven't been able to find one with small enough teeth however. I can't get more than one or two of the three teeth on due to the lip on the front of the oil pump.

May require heat to make it expand or release from the crank if ti's seized on there?

Anyone got any tricks for removing this pulley?

Cranks

Postby CAMB01 » Thu Aug 12, 2004 9:51 pm

hey dummies, bluetop crank has 40mm big ends, redtop has 42mm bigends, and it ain't the throw coz the stroke is the same. Its the pistons, blutop has a slight dish in the top, redtops are flat top pistons.
As for the pulley remove the thrust bearings and lift the crank out. Take it to somebody who has a press and press it out.

i just found out,
i think my engines a hybrid, its a bigport with TVIS,. 3 ribs on block whick makes me think its a bluetop,
but the cam covers were a red.black but the dude said they were wrong, now i just had a closer look, and my con-rods have oil squirters? i thought these wwere only on redtops? the crank big-end journals are scratched and i havnt measured them yet ( i dont have any vernier calipers or measuring tools)

u think the previos owner swappd redtop crank and pistons for higher compression? and the cam covers? but kept the block?

or do bluetops (AE82) have squirters too?
