Postby 2fas4u » Thu Aug 12, 2004 11:24 pm

Hi all, my baby (90' MR2 SW20) just failed WOF today cos of a cracked front LHS steering rack-boot or boot-rack. now is this a serious long term problem? i've been quoted 80 get it fixed (including labour and parts), that reasonable price to pay? cheers.

i gather your talking about the rubber boot that stop shit getting into the steering rack? nah, thats a very minor problem. its basically just protection for your steering. $80 is about average.

, if it's minor as my other mate suggested as well, why did he nab me for that? surely if he wanted to earn more money for his garage, he could have come up with things like brake pad too thin, which it is. he would hav earned alot more.

not true al, there has to be enough pad to last till the next warrant at least.

$80 seems about right, and while it may not seem like a major problem NOW, as the split worsens grit and crap will start getting into your steering rack, which WILL develop into a major problem. this is why its a WOF problem, if your steering rack stops functioning properly it can be dangerous (obviously)

i do them for $30 not including parts but thats just me
most cars in their lifetime have these sorts of things replaced
so dont get to worried

(wof does not look at break pads they dont even take the wheels off they just make sure it stops)

Think of it as preventative maintenance, just like a CV boot. Fix it now, and save in the long run.
BTW, don't forget to get a wheel alignment after it's done.

You shouldn't need one if the mechanic puts the tie rods on the same number of turns as he did taking them off - i've done them before and never needed and alignment yet.
