What's a ma45 lsd diff out of?

Postby terrytuffguy » Tue Aug 17, 2004 9:09 pm

I brought a live rear diff that has been modified to fit a kp60 Starlet, apparently it's a ma45 LSD celica diff. But what model Celica, and what engine would it be running to require a LSD? It's quite a large diff, it may be simular to the one the 10second DX corolla is running, if so then it should be strong enough for what I need it for.

cheers

maybe you should do some reasearch to familarise yourself with the cars you are grabbing bits off, so yo canm asked slightly informed questions.

they're a late 70's to 81 Celica/supra with a 2.8 straight 6

Oh ok cheers, Are the next model celica/supras IRS? The 10s DX is running a MA70 diff in a celica housing from what I've read, is that a later model diff head in a live rear end?

possibly the same housing as the IRS heads can be fitted to the earlier live axles of the same series

hope so! I'm worried about blowing the diff and not being able to find another one. It cost the guy $650 to modifiy my live rear end to fit into a starlet, and apparently $500 to buy the whole live diff from a wrecker.

the heads are still available ex celica /supras. with a starlet being as light as it is, a fair amount of grip wold be needed to blow one(or a few dumbass roll-backs)

If I can run a ma70 diff head like the Speedtech DX then it would be definitly a no worries option. BUT my ma45 diff is quite large, and I'm only running a light clutch at present. Only gonna be worried when I run semi slicks and start doing high rev launches to reduce turbo lag. It is likley to have some wear due to being an old diff.

it might not be a silly idea to get the head cleaned and re-lashed and run some decent limited slip oil in it.

a small clutch might not be a bad thing, it is then the weak link which is better to blow (and easier to obtain) than the diff , box etc.

Its running redline diff oil. But yea theres FA weight in the ass of a starlet, even with semi slicks I still think it will get some wheelspin which will dampen the shock. I'm running a W58, no worries about blowing that! It's running a 9inch clutch with a standard supercharged pressure plate, I may need to double diaphram it just to hold the 300+ hp I expect to get.

It is most likely an F code diff with 7.5 inch crownwheel, the centre from the IRS *A6* Celica/Supra's can be fitted if they have the F code (some are T series) but you need the right bearings. The MA70 is a G code with an 8 inch crownwheel with later ones changing to A or B code (apparently they are very similar, maybe interchangable). This the same as most Hilux/Hiace diffs.
Do a quick search on the net, there are plenty of listing of what the different diff codes are, as well as the codes for different cars/body styles etc.

I wont reveal that much  But I can say that it will be an expensive 4ag setup running huge amounts of boost.

umm, i don't think so. the back Speedtech DX is in the 10s and is from Wellington. Matt would like to be 10s in his yellow one from Timaru.
