GT4 Anti-lag and cat

Postby GT4 20 » Tue Aug 17, 2004 9:00 pm

Having a new exhaust fitted to the GT4 at the moment which gave me the chance to have a closer look at the anti lag set up due to the chargecooler being moved temporarily.

Image

By the looks of things, a solenoid controls a unit which is plumbed into the chargecooler which when it senses vacuum (ie, the throttle is shut), it allows pressurised air to be forced into the brass pipes which is then 'injected' into the exhaust manifold. The extra air helping to improve combustion in the exhaust manfold and hence keeping the turbo spinning.
Everything is in place - just needs a WRC car ECU or an aftermarket computer to get it working  Talk about temptation

And while I'm on the subject of exhausts...... part of the reason for a new system on the GT4 was to get rid of the cat. And, man was it being restrictive! It had become 'unstuck' in the pipe and dropped down, eventuually forcing its way down towards the elbow, taking on a slightly conical shape at the same time

Image
This shows how restrictive a cat is in the first place, but notice the rounding of the edge.....

Image
.... as a result of it being 'forced' so far down the pipe.

Here are a couple of views of the turbo outlet and downpipe under construction.

Am expecting a HUGE improvement when it's completed :D

Unfortunately not so simple! The bosses that hold the pipes to the manifold are actually solid, they would need to be drilled to allow airflow (easy). The pipes themselves though are largely for decoration. Very little air passes through them if you blow on one end. They would need to be remade with new tube and a bit of care. The valve beside the turbo exit is jammed shut, it must have a packer inside it to stop it moving. It would need to be cut open for investigation. The two relays on the back of the block should work. They are wired to the ECU.

Unless your MR2's an 1989 model you might wanna keep them for when the LTSA implements the new law affecting 1990 onwards vehicles and the requirement of a catalytic converter, even if it's just for wof issues, ahh the joys of owning a "1989" ST185

are you sure pre 90 is exempt? last info sheet i saw here said that a vehicle will have to comply with the rules it was built to meet... basiclly if your car was made to suit jap regulation whatever, then it must still do that....
also if it had a cat stock, it still needs one...(or will when the law changes)

thats not to say there hasnt been something differnt they came up with that i havnt seen yet, they change so often!

Yeah maybe they have changed their mind, just that last time I was at a VTNZ testing station getting a WOF I picked up a sheet with propesed law changes on it stating the 1990 onwards thing becoming into effect as of Jan '05 either way I have kept my cat for insurance against this just in case.

Hahahaha, Al's cat is nothing more than an empty shell now after I took to it with a drill, hammer & screwdriver!
Maybe u should post a pic Al.
I've kept my cat in, another empty shell, tho, so I hope they don't have a sniffer tester....

Heh, about the only break I'll get for having an older car :!:
Only another 20 years till I get cheaper reg

Seeing as some states in Aus have pretty tough emission rules there should be 'good' flowing cats available at reasonable prices.

But if they bring in emission requirements for the WoFs, a lot of garages will forgo doing warrants as the testing equipment is very expensive. But I know what you're saying, I get the same deal here!!
