4age ae101 synchros

Postby agrath » Wed Aug 25, 2004 11:52 am

Hey guys,
This has probably been covered before but...

from reading the forums it seems this is a more common problem than i'd like.... my 2nd gear in my 1992 20v gtapex trueno crunch if i dont match revs right, and since i haven't learnt any of the methods preveviously mentioned (heal toe, double d etc) this means that if i'm not uber careful on downchange then it makes this horrible sound that makes me cringe every time. Since i prefer to engine brake rather than hit the brakes hard and risk abs, (i know it wears my clutch more, but i'll deal) its sometimes a real mission getting it from 3rd to second and i have to take it really slow which i kinda hate since i'm using it to slow down, especially if theres stationary traffic approaching at a rather fast rate of knots :)

anyway, i've heard that its more than likely synchros, how much am i looking at for parts and average labour in hours? i have a few friends who i can pay mates rates to but just trying to get a feeling for how much the repairs will cost me...
new gearbox? fix the synchros? replace the syncs? what should be done?

cheers,
Gareth

Cant help you as far as a price goes, but while its buggered you might as well see if you can get double declutching worked out :)

Clutch in, shift to neutral, clutch out, rev up to what you want them to be, clutch in, shift to second, clutch out.

The revs should be where you want them to be as you're putting it in to gear so you might want to over rev slightly or change quite quickly :) At least with a buggered synchro on second you'll know if you're doing it right or not

if all you need is the synchro rings your looking at $100-130 but you wont know what you need untill you get it in bits

cheers man... i was kinda hoping it would be known, so i could get the bits and then schedule a time for my mate to do it, but if it has to be taken apart to find out what is needed, i'll do that first. he may prefer i take it to someone else who is more knowledgable when it comes to gearboxes etc, i'll ask :)
btw, you might remember i was after a regulator for my window a while back, well i pulled it out, including the motor, (finally) and checked it with some wires off a 12v battery and it worked perfectly, so i put it back in and now the window works fine... mighty odd.

b4 u go rip out the gear box change the gear oil first, put thin oil in mayb ATF or thin red line gear oil, syncros rnd off after time and thick oil is usless. if that doesnt solve the problem try pumping clutch in neutral between 2nd and third, it could b sticking check clutch fluid etc aswell. doubt it will b clutch tho if it just doin it in to 2nd gear.
