shift lights and dash looms

Postby agrath » Wed Aug 25, 2004 1:33 pm

hey all, I got given a gizzmo (i think thats spelled right) shift light by my brother for my birthday (he got it cheap off his mate, who didnt know how to install it) and i have the manual but i'm not sure on a couple of things
1- how do i find the damn loom, according to the manual its either a gt4 or a gt5 style loom, with 2 or 3 plugs respectively, but where the $&#$% is it?
is it behind the dash (like by the needles etc) or is it under the steering column cause there's a mighty fat loom with some big plugs under there...
for reference
ae101 1992 trueno 4age
once i know which loom it is, and which wires are which, im sure i can do the rest... and i'm sorta broke so theres no paying an autoelectrician to find it for me... photo would be good
also, how do i get the dash apart? :)
since my bday was over a month ago i probably should install the shift light so my brother doesnt get angry...

Just do what every other ricer out there does, stick it on your dash and don't worry about hooking it up :-)

hey, if you need some help i can get ou some pics of how i got mine in. What wires are there on it and where does it say they should go? For mine, i put it on the right hand side, and 'tapped' into the mirror operating thing (for your side mirrors) and its mounted just above that. You can find the power wire here (get a multi meter) and you might be able to find a ground but i used the battery ground. Then you just gotta put the third wire which goes to the coil onto the coil which can be seen on thoes pics. There are two wires to choose from. They are labeled 1 and 2. On mine, the negative was wire 2. Get your multi meter and find out which is the positive and tap in to the OTHER one which is the negative. get some insulation tape and your done :D

Thanks, I read the post... didn't seen any pics tho, i'd rather go for an interior loom crimp or something for the coil, since i'd like to avoid running wires from inside the cab to the bonnet... i'll have another look soon

Tap it straight off the back of the dash(i.e factory tacho), There is no need to run more wires than necessary

just do what i did to find the right wire
with the car running hold on to a metal part with one hand and with the other use a piece of wire and touch each pin behind the dash until you get a massive shock :) thats what i did (not intentional but worked :P)

The one at the top of this page.

I have the manual that came with the shifty, but can't get the loom diagram to match since i dont know how to find the loom its meant to match up to, or how to remove the dash for that matter...

photos would be great :)
