tyre size and feeling

Postby TRDmod » Wed Aug 25, 2004 9:09 am

i have st205, HAI, i have 17 inch, 225/45 on it hai, if i put 17 inch 235/40 on it, what sort of different would i make, it makes sence to say that its wider hence a lil more grip but, my cuzins type r actually performed worse on lower profile tyres. what i expect the same consideration. i was thinking of putting in either goodyear GSD3, Dunlop DIREZZA or GRID 3 bridgestones 235/45/17...

feed back please, i need to know what sort of difference in handling i would feel, also, it has factory suspension, non lowered, the mags are light weight though, but some have told me that the car gbecomes less agile......is this true, ...

the feeling

Postby tom_rose » Wed Aug 25, 2004 11:50 pm

hey dude i used to work at mag and turbo go for the grid 3s there a bit more money but you get what you pay for right. There a bloody good tire. And it doesnt matter what anyone suggests you dont wanna run the PSI in them that the car manufactures suggest. They tell you to run it very low to make the car ride better but your tires only last half as long. If your running 15 to 17 run 34psi 18 above for grip 34 for good wear 38 anywhere between there is good.
Drink more you'll feel beter

235/40-17 the 40 is not a measurement it is a percentage of the width of the tyre ie 40 percent of 235.
235/40-17 is 15 mm lower overall rolling diameter than 225/45-17 , 235/45-17 is 10 mm higher overall rolling diameter than 225/45-17 so the 235/45-17 wood be better as wood be closer to keeping your correct speedo reading and will allow slightly more roll over in the tyre as the sidewall has more to it ie better grip .
As for the tyre i wood recomend goodyear gsd3 as they are the top of the linbe tyre at the moment as voted by 5 independant european magazines and i drive on them daily and can't fault them , they hold exceptionally well in the wet and cornering is vastly improved , and that is the tyre i sell to all my friends , family and clients . :D

Na dude definately go for the Grid III, they are so much better than the GSD3, ive tried most tyres but the best is the Grid III, unless you can get hold of some S03's also by bridgestone but they will leave a big hole in your pocket! but they are the Shiz

Not quite but nearly! It is a percentage, but its the percentage of sidewall in the 'bead to bead' measurement. ie. a 235/40-17. 235mm tread width. 40% of the bead to bead measurement is sidewall (20% each side), that leaves 60% to be tread. 60%=235mm, so 20%=47mm of sidewall.

Anyway, enough crap. The below link has a hand java app to work out the rolloing road difference for your new tyres. It gives everything in percentages, along with the effect it's going to have on your speedo. Worth a squizz.

I've got GIIIs on my Trueno and GSD3s on the Golf. I far prefer the Goodyears (they feel much better - the GIIIs are just another ordinary tyre as far as I can tell) but wouldn't recommend them if you go anywhere near a track - the constant v tread pattern makes them wear out very quickly.

The bridgestone so3 tyres are seriously overpriced for what they are and when they were compared against gsd3 's they lost in almost every category ! The bridgestone so2's weren't a bad tyre but then they changed the pattern with the so3's and its not as good.
The grid 3's are a good tyre but are still over-priced for a middle/top of the range tyre . They are about the same field as the dunlop direzza and the direzzas are much better than the grid 3's and are better priced as well.
All in all the goodyear gsd3's are a tyre that was based on a slick design and then had the eagle grooves cut into them and i have personally tested a few tyres and found the goodyears to be the best by far :D
