ok ppl
my engine was making a bloody noisy rattle when i stuck a load on it. so i got my friend to drive it up the drive and when he disengaged the clutch the whole engine moved backwars 8O . my car is a st182 celica, is this normal or what. it's also causing the rattle, well im sure what it is anyway. its got me stumped. any one know whats going on.

The motor should move when you rev it a bit due to torque, but if it's excessive and it's making clunking noises as you said then you've probably got $&#$% engine mounts. Grab the motor by the carry hooks and reef it back and forwards, if it moves, at least one is shagged.

whats involved in fixing the mount? do u have to remove the motor. and how much is it likely to cost?

shouldn't need to remove the engine, just attach it to a chain hoist/engine crane, undo engine mount, lift to take the weight off so you can get the bolt out, replace with new engine mount, bolt back in, drop the engine again.

recently i read about (somewhere on here i think) a tear in the firewall from a gt4, i'd have a look for something like this as well.

easy to change, just jack up the engine or gearbox in a position to take the weight off the mount you wanna change and unbolt it and stick the new one on... use a block of wood if you have to jack up the oil pan to spread the load
