R??

Postby the fallen303 » Sun Sep 05, 2004 4:50 pm

hey guys, odd question this one. i've got a 93 NZ made corolla 5 door lift back, 4a-fe manual. i just had a look at my firewall plate, as i wanted to know what box i'm running (c52, sweet) and i had a look at my chassis tag, it says it's an ae101 (cool) but there is an R after the ae101, no dash between it, so it read AE101R-XXXXX. wondering if anyone can explain this for me? is it NZ made specific? is it meaning some options, or is it just a letter?

thanks

R shows it was sold NZ new, does not mean it was assembled here though. :D

I would suspect it actually means right hand drive.

You would suspect incorrectly 8O The R means it was sold new in NZ and most the time it will have been assembled in NZ but there are a few cars that were assembled in other countries but sold new in NZ. :D

als got it right there, i suspect he read another post where i said that!

the 'r' means right hand drive for an export country, any country other than japan being deemed an export country.
there is also 'l' for lefthand drive, 'h' for homologation (only seen that on st185 rc models.
'w' fpr wagon 'v' for van, which determines the spec of a van or 4wd, ie 'w' means passenger wagon where 'v' is for cargo spec vehilces.
have also seen 'k' stuffed if i know what that is, is may be for special ordered vehicles cause that was on an ambulance.

so if you have a toyota and its got an 'r' after the first part of the model number then its 99% likely to be nz new, it may have been imported from another country as a private import
