Shorter shocks

Postby RE20 » Mon Sep 06, 2004 5:23 pm

Hello Im planning on lowering my car , KP Starlet by compressing the springs in the meantime until I can get some aftermarket ones (which will need to be compressed anyway). So to keep it captive I'm going to need some new shocks.

I don't know much about suspension setups so I'd like to find out a little before I do anything.

My question is, how do I choose a shorter shock? Would I compress the springs and then choose a shock the right size to make it captive? Or do off the shelf shocks allow for a bit of variation?

Id like to buy some shocks that will fit some lower aftermarket springs as well as I would like to get some compressed king springs later on and don't really want to buy new shocks twice. Does this mean I'd have to get ajustable shocks? Otherwise I could awlays have them machined down a little?

I hope I have been clear on everything!

Like I said I don't know very much but would like to find out :) Thanks!!

BTW: Does anyone know where TSV Suspension in palmerston north send springs to be compressed?

Are you sure your standard shocks wont handle it? You'll probably find they're fine.

If not, there are a couple of options. Either have your factory shocks shortened (not too expensive) or get new shocks. Most after market shocks (eg munroe gas gt) allow for more variation than standard shocks.

If it were me, I'd just use my standard shocks. If they dont end up being captive, get some aftermarket shocks.

You will need a cert for compressed springs, and for shortening shocks. However you don't need to cert aftermarket shorter stroke shocks that haven't been messed with. See if you can talk nicely to a suspension shop and get a look through one of their books for something suitable. I have heard AW11 MR2 rears may be suitable (inserts).
For the rear suspension, look at I think Commodore wagon shocks. My standard springs were barely captive on standard length shocks.
