took the old race car to puke this sat for a bit of a thrash and totally destroyed the clutch, managed to get it home on the rivets, that was a new standard clutch so a heavy duty one seems to be in order.any ideas on wot clutch i should get and this car is street legal so needs to have some driveabilty.

Chances are you just need to replace the Driver, even a standard 8.5" clutch should be good for months of track days with nothing but heat fade to worry about.

Im after an 8.5" clutch for my fxgt too.

Got my eye on an exedy organic clutch or an exedy cerametallic paddle clutch.

http://www.coximport.com/exedy/

Would the organic full face clutch be good enough for a 4age producing up to 170Hp?

This is where it gets interesting, when deciding on a clutch setup, most people overlook one one component that's actually letting them down - The pressure plate...

A 8.5" organic disc can handle 170bhp easy, only thing that lets organics down is their susceptability to heat, once they get hot, they slip until they cool down.

Thats onlt if you ride it though isnt it?

On the list I posted it says the organic clutch has 40% extra clamping force but when u click on the p/n for the 4age clutch it says 4%. Typo??

Is this the same as a standard exedy clutch?

How about an 'exedy Extreme series clutch' has anyone heard of these and know what theyre worth?

Clamping force is relative to surface contact area, ie, if a 4 puck disc has 50% less surface area than a full face disc, it will have twice as much Clamping force.

Before you go shelling out $bazillion$ for a fancy branded plate, wait a week or two, I'm having the guys at Clutch systems here in Christchurch make me a 8.5" 4 puck for the MR2, is costing me $280+gst. It's gonna be ready for me on Thursday, I'll stick it back in the car on Monday and tell you how it is; I can pretty much already guarantee it's workmanship.

They supply all my clutch bits, and I reccomend everyone I know to them, most of the quickest Mitsi's in Christchurch also get their bits from there :-)

theres also TRD

a puck type clutch isnt that much fun on the road.....

maybe just a beefed up pressure plate will do, $280 for a puck type isnt bad at all, if you can handle the whiplash on take off that and a stronger pressure plate maybe what you need

Should see him in the queues at Ruapuna! it's like you've just chucked a bag of 20c coins into a Kiddy Ride at the supermarket :-)

Next time you're down I'll show ya how to comfortably drive a 4 puck without getting whiplash or wearing it out <g>

Depends on how healthy your hub is to start with, the rubber bits on 4age clutches can pack a sad quite easily.

I mean, I only have a bunch of 8 inch clutches but want a 8.5 inch h/d or paddle clutch.
Do they need an old clutch to make those paddle clutches? or do they make them from new parts?
if yours was made from old parts, what would it cost to make one from new parts?

Not always the case.

We ran a corona turbo as an enduro car. (3sfe 11:1 comp +10psi)
Std clutch that had already done 40,000kms lasted 1 1/2 hours of racing.
Fitted a brand new one and it lasted 15 mins. Same car, same drivers.
One that's a bit worn in may last a bit longer.

But anyway....

Another option is to get the flywheel machined witha bit more of a set ip in and use a std clutch plate and a heavy duty pressure plate.

In saying that though i have a puck clutch and a std pressure plate. (but thats not a road car.)

I'll find out on Thursday when I pick it up, I took my clutch plate and pressure plate in there, so he could skim the pressure plate, and since the clutch plate only had 1000k's on it I figured we could use that hub, I'm not sure if the $280 included a new hub or not.(The 4age hubs are sub $40 anyway)

I'll snap some pics of it when it's finished and I'll post them too.

had a exedy 8" 4 puk with h/d cover that took a good beat, reconmended, if you do recess the set on the flywheel be careful as you can get dissengagement problems, ive also seen a few nz made p/plates that get dissengagement probs
