piston regrooving

Postby kingcorolla » Tue Sep 07, 2004 7:50 pm

hey guys,
my shortblocks at the re-conditioners at the mo, i was jus wondering, after getting my pistons regrooved, will factory spec rings still be appropriate to seal? or is there slight variations of O/S rings?

If you change the width of the ring groove, you will require new rings to suit. I'm not sure if they do over-thickness rings.

IMO you'd be best to replace the pistons if they have ring-groove issues. Go to .5mm (.020") oversize, and then get the rings to match (would normally come with the pistons).

there is no issue in the piston grooves, just a general procedure in a rebuild.
I aint gonna bother with new pistons, 1st of all coz its a N/A 4a-ge, second of all, coz i already have had some costly probs in the bottom end, that need fixing. eg. 2 run bearings, wrong crank/rods (42mm) in a 3 rib block. Grrrrrrr ended up buying basicly a new shortblock!!

the re-grooving is just a recon option i have chosen, and is just wondering if facory rings will be acceptable. I am not expecting big alteration in the original grooves.

and i dont have any measuring tools, so i couldnt confirm the size of the crank etc.

lucky im rebuilding it, that engine was F-F-F-FUUUKKKDD
brought it dirt cheap tho
