Shift light - feed from Crank Angle Sensor?

Postby aesc » Thu Sep 09, 2004 2:11 pm

Well im putting a shift light into my gtz this weekend. Since it has twin coils, im not exactly sure about getting a feed for it. I know I need the negative wire from the coil but am not sure which one this is. Can i take this feed straight from one of the wires off the Crank Angle Sensor (ie feed before the coils)? I have downloaded a pinout from Clug4AG but it doesnt mean a lot to me, however have figured out there are 4 wires that come off the CAS. So which wire off the C.A.S is the tacho feed wire?

G- (White wire)
G1 (Green)
G2 (Black)
NEG (Red)

And if anyone is not sure, how could i test for the negative wire on a multimeter?

Thanks

why don't you just hook it up behide the dash where it say "-IGN" .. which will be the reading for the factory tacho...

I have thought about doing this but with the way im mounting it, it might not be able to be done that way (kinda hard to explain) and its almost easier just running a wire into the engine bay.

All you would need to do is identify the tacho feed wire at the ECU, which i think in AE101 is just down to the left of your stereo position, I've got all the diagrams for which pin is which, just gotta find them

have you seen the pics that i put up a little while back for a ae101 4age engine bay? if its the same, you can see which wires it is from there.

Yeah I did see that, its a little different being a GTZ though, not the same as a 20V. Thanks anyway.

Might just pull the cluster out, is the wire -IGN clearly labelled?

Otherwise looks like ill be using the 'trial and error' method

it should have the "-IGN" printed on the PCB board and with a philip srew on it too. All I did on both my cars are just unsrew the srew and get a connector thinggy on the tacho wire and srew back on the "-IGN".. I even get the power and gound the same way for the shift light.
Else anothing thing you can try is ..locate the diagnosis "box" at the engine bay and tap to the "IG-" pin's wire.. or something... it should be at the side on the "box" with a rubber cap on.

genuine as I need to hook up my gizzmo shiftlight / launch controller

i tried to hook my powerlink up to ign - on the back of my dash board but it stole the signal to the rev counter and that didnt work then.

So maybe u need some special box the does something, someone told me to use soemthing off a vr4 i cant remember what is is though.
I just ended up using ign - off one of my coils and that was ok but only gets half the signal, its ok for a powerlink cos u can adjust the pulse but prob not good idea for a shift light.

ahh you mean a tacho interface. yeah if i get one of those I can run it off the link output witch is only a low drive. other way to do it is off the factory rev counter feed.

Ok just taken out the gauge cluster and there is no '-IGN' labelled. Theres about 4 or 5 'IG's behind there but no other obvious similar ones to -IGN. Where to from here?

emm.. The "IG" will be the ignition power, try "guessing" which is -ign. Try guessing from behide the rev counter.. I'll guess one of the srews will be it. use a multimeter to help you.

im guessing, IF u are still keen on runnin it off the C.A.S, "i think" they function the same way to a optical electronic distributor.. i think.

so there might/should be 3 wires off the c.a.s,
-power,
-ground,
and ecu signal wire
use a multimeter to determine power, and continuity between housing and earth wire. which hopefully leave ure signal wire. just run a bypass to the tacho.

no experience with c.a.s, correct me if im wrong anyone

Yeah there were quite a few 'IG' and yeah i thought they wouldve been ignition power. Also tried guessing from the screws directly behind the tacho but that didnt work. Ive got a multimeter coming today so i will test it out sometime. At the moment, ive just got a wire going through to the engine bay and have jammed in into the IG- terminal in the diagnostic connector 8)

Hmm now that ive seen how easy it is to take out the cluster and use a fork terminal to connect it to one of the screws back there I think ill do that! But yeah there are 4 wires from the CAS as i descibed up the page a bit.
