Cough

Postby CAMB01 » Sun Aug 29, 2004 10:56 pm

Can anyone please help me?
My car coughs and splutters when i start it cold, then the auto choke comes in. When i drive off when its still cold the engine hesitates and coughs, i put my foot down and nothing happens, it splutters its way up the revs then at about 3500 RPM it comes right. The engine is totally fine when it reaches operating temp, no worries at all.
Any information would be greatful thanx.

P.S. its a redtop big port 4AGE.

Common place in carbed motors.

My cresta did it, my hiace does it, and the panelbeaters loan car does it too. I think it's just carb icing or similar? Not sure, i've always ignored it, don't have too many problems with it usually because i leave it idling for 30 seconds while I close the gates before I leave in the morning so it's warm enough before it gets onto the road.

Postby CAMB01 » Mon Aug 30, 2004 9:31 pm

Thank you for pointing that out Al.
I Have new platinum plugs in it, leads are ok cap is ok.
I do have a problem with an oil leak, have learned this is a common problem. Oil leaking into the distributor coz the rotor shaft seal has given up due to age. Wondering if the oil getting inside the dizzy is causing a problem. Does anyone know how to fix this problem other than getting a new dizzy or second hand one.

Sowwie - I didn't know that, I'm trying to learn stuff like that :) And the original poster didn't mention if it was Carb or EFi.

Maybe the cold start injector isn't working.

Once you let the key go from start back to on the cold start injector does nothing so that will not be the problem.
It's a cold start injector not a cold run injector.

My bet would be temp sensor or temp sensor wiring.
Unplug it plug it back on and give it a wriggle.

The engine was rebuilt about 30000km ago, it started doing it about 3000km ago. I'll check the cold start injector.

Have you tried reading the ecu for fault codes?

If you state the auto choke is coming out, one would asume it's a carbie, as injected motors dont have chokes

4AGE's idle at about 2500RPM when cold, revs drop as the engine warms up.

Was there a point to this post? Or is it just forum diarrhea?

The point here is that the car sohuld be able to run fine while cold, that's how they're designed. Few people can be bothered waiting for the car to warm up before driving it.
