Don't know if it coud cause this; but on the 4AGE's the O2 sensor is not heated (I don't think), so That would also mean that you would be getting some odd signals from the sensor untill the exhaust manifold had warmed the sensor up to operation temp.

So that would mean your air fuel ratio will be up the duff untill your car is a bit warmer.

No. As you know the ox sensor only works when hot so the ECU does not accept singals from it unless the car is up to normal temp, and the throttle is constant. 1 wire oxy sensors are used for cruise mode only. The rest of the time it's just there for the ride.

OK. Thanks Matt, I did not know that.
What symptoms would a bad O2 sensor give?

My mates cars O2 sensor $&#$% out and it ran hella rich(was an ae111) would puff smoke every where and the engine light was on. Only came on after driving for 5 min once the oxy sensor had warmed up. Replaced it and reset the ecu and was sweet. That doesnt sound like this guys problem tho sorry. Had an ae92 that did this and it was crap(watery oil) in the dizzy it bogged down low but reved ok

AE111 would have a 3 or 4 wire sensor which are much more reliable and accurate than a 1 wire.

1 wire sensors will cause higher fuel usage on long cruises but that about all. I dont even think that it is important enough to bring on the check engine light.
