Electric Celica power steering?

Hey I heard somewhere that the MR2 has electric power steering... anyone know if the ST202 Celica's have this also?

If so is there a fuse somewhere? my cars steering is really really heavy... but not as heavy as you'd expect if say the belt snapped (had this happen on my honda prelude once, the steering was REALLY heavy)

The fluid level is ok... its a green colour... is this normal for these celicas?

Alignment is all ok as is tyre pressures

ST202 have normal hydraulic steering.

PS fluid is normally reddish. Radiator fluid is green.

hmm... well theres definately a yellowish-clear tank with dirty looking green fluid in it...

If you have a digital camera you wouldn't be able to show me where the resiovir is, just to make sure I am infact looking at the right thing?

This is a GT-Four, but ST202 is similar.

On the left of the photo at the front you can just see the headlight washer reservoir. Behind that is the ABS actuator (only for ABS models obviously). The plastic tank behind that with the black cap is the PS reservoir.

If the fluid is murky having it changed is a good start. Messy job as you have to undo a hose union to get the fluid out, then refill.

Thanks Running Rich, yeah I was definately looking at the right container. Its actually browner than I thought, propbably closer to brown than green... but its very gluggy looking especially on the top.

do you think it can honestly make a difference changing the fluid?
If you think so, I'll get a pro to do it.

Is it best to get it flushed, or just changed?

If its not red, and thin'ish' then yes, its definitly worth changing. If its cluggy, then yeah, it will prolly need flushing out. Easy enough to do yaself if you are slightly mechanical. Follow one of the hoses to its lowest point. Undo fitting and drain all oil. refit, fill up, start car, gently go from lock to lock a few times. Then drain again. Do this again, but hopefully it will stay more red, and a lot thinner. And hopefully steering is better.

Thick gluggy fluid would definitly make steering hard, and possibly make funny noises when turning wheel.

Well I got the fluid flushed out and new stuff put in (aparantly they had to use extra fluid because there was so much junk in there)

But no improvement whatsoever! $90 down the drain... lol oh well i guess its all maintenence, could save me forking out for a new rack down the line.

Any other ideas? Could it be suspension related? pump not pumping hard enough?

If youre not getting any grinding noises and the steering is functional and smooth (all beit hard) i'd reccomend getting a power steering specialist to look at it.

Auckland Power Steering Specialists in Takanini were good when my PS pump needed rebuilding, you could ask them what they think...

They did my ST185 no problems. :)
