Caldina ST215 groan noise from pod filter?

Postby YTWGN » Sun Sep 12, 2004 6:49 pm

When easing off the throttle on the GTT it lets out a strange low groan, its totally different from the exhale noise. The car has a sard pod filter and 2.5" exhaust.

Does anyone know what makes this noise?

Apparantly if you put the standard cold air box back on it gets rid of the noise, according to a mate.

TWSTD: I notice you have a similar setup, have you experienced this?

true, only took a quick glance...

I would suggest that the groan could be (twstd correct me if I'm wrong here buy your Idle air intake is on a seperate filter?)

but it looks like your idle air intake is plugged in just behind the air filter,

when you drop foot off accelerator and vacumn appears and increases, the idle air intake sucks gradually harder and harder, causing a bit of a groaning noise...

I could however be totally off the mark here...

That sounds exactly like what it is. Im yet to put the boost gauge in the car but it is just as the car is heading into vacuum that the noise happens.

I am in Auckland (north shore) so if you wouldn't mind confirming that theory :D .

BTW. what boost can the factory B.O.V handle before it leaks? Can it handle 1.0 bar alright?

Cheers for the help.

not certain on the physics, but its to do with the directional change in the air & its velocity that causes the noise,

I have it occur on mine as well,

however being in wellington I cant help, but I'm sure twstd can...

So its nothing to really worry about?

Any ideas on how to get rid of it?

best way of testing the theory would be to get a small filter and attach it to the end of your idle air intake, (make sure you block the pipe from the side of you air intake so you dont suck dirty air into your turbo)

then run the car like that and see if it still makes the noise...

Oh ok sweet.

Yeah I'd be keen to give it a test with the filter.

Might give you a call sometime.

Thanks,

Chris.
