NEED HELP identifying wires

Postby driftae86 » Mon Sep 13, 2004 5:09 pm

hey guys,

im trying to fit a cdplayer to my ae86 sprinter and i need help identifying some wires.

the plug going into the back of the standard stereo has 7 wires coming out of it. i have identified that the white wire and the black/white striped wire lead to the left hand speaker and the red wire and the black/red striped wire lead to the right hand side speaker.

so that leaves 3 wires:
- a white wire with a black stripe
- a green wire
- a blue wire with a black stripe

which of these three is the earth?
which is the accessories?
and which is the power?

need help ASAP!

cheers

hey dude,
this is were a multimeter is PERFECT to have,
for an earth, just find a good earth behing the dash, eg. steel support bracket. And then test for continuity between the earth, and the stereo wires, watever one beeps, thats ure ground.

for power, u should have a common 12v (mite be red), and a ACC 12v(mite be yellow), test for 12.4V with wires and ignition on, and off, to test for both power wires.

ok,

but what if i dont have a multimeter?

a person on another forum believes that the white/ black one is earth, the blue/black one is accessories and the green one is power.

i just need confirmation of this before i start

I Fully sugget getting a multimeter as they are good things to have, however a dodgy as way to find out your power wires is to just quickly tap them onto a metal earthed part of the car- it will spark. be prepared to buy a new fuse if you dont do it fast enough though.
once you have found that, find the earth by putting your positive feed on a light bulb and then trying the other wires to see which one lights it.
make sure you dont use a light feed for earth though or it will blow as soon as you turn lights on.

If you dont want a multimeter then you'll at least need a testlight. Be just as easy with a testlight.

i brought mine from trade tools, coz if u use it as much as i do, u want a good one..
i spent $150, but its worth its weight in gold to me, mine does everything from test distributor dwell angle, to liquid temperature. those supercheap ones dont last long

Sounds like you have only the 12v supply hooked up not the ignition.
usually its the yellow and the red wires, got both hooked up to power?

i believe i have figured out the problem.

in this stereo the accesories wire is yellow and the power is red. there is a fuse on the yellow wire (accesories wire) and it may be blown. that would mean that i have constant power but no accessories power causing nothing to show up on the face.

maybe...

could that be the cause?

If that fuse is blown then yes thats ur problem. U will have BATT power which gives u digital memory but no IGN power which is the power for the stereo to turn on. so thats why u aint got not display. get a new fuse and hey presto.... stereo goes :D
