short shifter installation

Postby wanado13's » Sat Sep 11, 2004 5:44 pm

hey, has any one put a short shifter in their ae92 levin? is it hard to do? to put one in do just have to move all the plastic covers in the car to do it or what? reason I'm asking is I'm getting a new gearbox put in my car and want to know if i should get it put in then or is it something i can do later no problem? thanks

its something you do from the inside of the car, on the base of the gear stick,

all it is, is a gear stick with a longer load arm, and a spacer plate to raise the mounting points up to take into account the extra length in the load arm.

cheap option

Postby fxgt race » Sun Sep 12, 2004 10:31 pm

as i have done in my race car,got hold of a second gear lever, cut the bottom off the original one and cut the bottom off the other one but 20mm longer ,had the longer piece welded to the original lever making the lower arm after the ball longer and hence making the throw shorter, put some bolts to lift the whole gear lever up to stop it hitting the body, and presto short shifter all for $5 dollars of welding

a TRD one is $300, comes with a flash gear knob that retails at around $130. but if you can make one yourself thats a good option.

i run a TRD short shift in my 101 gtz " thanks mr revhead " they are so easy to install in my case the gtz runs a diff spacer setting than the gt apex " this dosnt help u tho " all in all about 20mins to put in

cuts about 30mm of the " top " throw and 40mm of the bottom throw so its all good for short shifting

oh and the gear knob lets just say im lucky mr revhead didnt nick it  f$#$'n rad

i would never nick it! .... just i was tempted to 'swap' it for my cheap TRD one

it all depends what you want, some ppl dont mind paying for a genuine one thats has 'label' factor nothing wrong with that. others would rather make something or go for a cheaper 'no name' brand. nothing wrong with that as long as the quaility is there, which in this case seems to be ok with a bit of fiddling. but with the cheap one, add a comparable gear knob that you get with the TRD one and the price difference is very much
