rebuilding 4age

Postby sanchez » Tue Sep 14, 2004 6:28 pm

hey, just wondering who out there has had to have a 4age (16 valve) re-built, what problems did you run into, what did it cost you, and just if there are any words of warning on things to look out for, wat generally needs attention. Cheers guys, Neil

Advice:
1. buy or hire an engine stand, makes building engines much easier.
2. Do the dissassembly and then take all parts to the machine shop to be hot dipped.
3. Spray the block and sump with high temp engine enamel as soon as you get it back from the wash to stop it from rusting. Mask off all the important sealing surfaces.
4. Budget up to $1000. (parts, machining, labour) for total rebuild job. However, the more you do the less it will cost, and it really depends on workshop's price.
5. Buy a workshop manual! You will need it for the torque settings.

Sometimes the crank pulley that turns the cambelt can become seized onto the crank.

Before you send the parts off to the machine shop it pays to make a list of all the pieces. Or take a digital photo. Keep the receipts.

It pays to measure all the critical dimensions before you send off the parts like for example measure the bore for out of roundness. It may be cheaper to start with another block if this one is oval... or if you find cracks for example.

Always leave your torque wrench un-tensioned when storing it. Otherwise the internal spring mechanism looses accuracy. Torque wrenches reliy on thefact that you are applying the pressure at 90degrees to the bolt, so keep it perpendicular. Also, the threads of the bolts must be in good condition, clean and lightly lubricated to get an accurate torque.

Things to look for... depends on your budget, but basics like bearings, rings, valve seals would be good. The workshop will tell you all the services they can do and you need to choose what you want done.

Take your time with the rebuild so you know you have got it correct. The 4age is fairly straight foward. Good luck.

EXACTLY what i have done, in that order to.

yup, happened to me too! Had to buy a gear puller!

but u will run into a few thing whilst rebuilding, mostly replacement parts. Great fun tho. the best part is when it starts up for the 1st time

and i fully reccomend an engine stand too. i brought one from supercheap, $69.
