Pick up a set of AE82 radiator fans... one of them has this little electronic component on it inline with the power and earth leads...
What is it?

by the sounds of it, i could be a relay or sumthing??
should give more detail, ie, if it was a relay, it would have 4-5 terminals so, u wanna extend on that explanation..?

Two terminal electronic component. Looks like a MOSFET...
Will probably be a resistor used to run the fans on half speed for air conditioning.
This sounds quite likely... I thought it might be some sort of limiter... How can I use it? I could use a half speed style function...

u could probably look at a wiring diagram, or just hook it up to a temporary 12v supply, and test its function.
one thing im not clear on is, is it like a separate box with 2 terminals, or is it in series with the curcuit (inline) with two terminals on one side?

Sorry... my bad...
It's a four terminal... and it's inline... Two wires on plug side, into device, and then two wires out of device and into fan....
I'm think it's a combination thermostat/resistor... runs fan at low until the shroud gets hot enough then fan switches to high speed... Or possibly varies it the whole time... Not really important... fan goes, I'll do testing as I go...

it sounds like a relay to me, could be wrong tho. The elecctric fan operation is usually triggered by a thermo switch, either on radiator or somewhere on hot area of cooling system.
Look for letters or any markings on the box, this could help us also
im pretty sure these relays are normally closed, so look for a 12v supply wires, on the side between the fan, and the mystery box... thats if it is a relay, u could hook up to a 12v supply and the fan would operate.
other wise matt is right and it is a resistor for the A/C, im just guessing its a relay
