conversion from redtop head to silvertop 20v, whats needed?

Postby R15 » Sun Sep 19, 2004 12:34 pm

my mate has a ae92 levin and he is keen to put a 20v head on his factory red top, the reason for not changeing the whole motor is because the 20v is kinda tired, so the question is what does he need to get from the 20v to do this, does the computer and looms need to be changed? does all the intake need to be changed? do the manifolds bolt on ? does the head bolt straight onto the block? is the cambelt teeth the same? can the same cam belt be used? please let me know any changes that will need to be made if you can.

thanks heaps

I belive for a start, the pistons need to be changed since the valve patern in the crwon is different.

If it's a smallport he's much better rebuilding whatever is wrong with the redtop. Your getting almost the same bottom half (other than the pistons) and the external oil return. Redtop smallports also respond better to modifications like cams better than the 20 valves and he won't have to replace wiring, and computer.
Manifolds are not interchangable between 16 and 20 valves. Injector placement is also different, 16 valve in the head, 20 valve in the manifold.
Belt on the 20 valve has two additional teeth. No not interchangeble.

My 2c.
The answer is Helmholtz!

yeah for what its worth rebuild the 16v, only worth putting the 20v head on if your building a race motor and making other mods to suit (some would even debate it then).
