Quick release hubs

Postby GT4 20 » Sat Sep 25, 2004 6:34 pm

Does anyone know what, if any, rules there are governing the use of quick release steering wheel hubs on road legal race cars? Such as these -

I was told by a 'not so reliable' source that they must now be of a lockable type that can only be released by inserting a key.

The rules that i know are, if the car is road legal you can only have an approved type as you cannot have the mechanisum that you chop and weld the detaching hub to the steering shaft. If the car is not road legal then you can do wat u want as long as it is safe.

Talk to a certifier, for road use it WILL need to be certed. They can give you the correct and up to date info.

The entire car will need to be certified once it's been rebuilt so no issue there. Just need to know what is and what isn't legal before I go and order one  Just wondering if anyone knew for certain - otherwise it'll be a phone call on Monday :D

I remember reading something about these and from what i remember there are two types, one of which can be released by hand and one that requires some special keys to be inserted before being able to be released and the jobbie with the keys was legal for road use and the non keyed one illegal for normal road use, there should be something on MSNZ site.

As long as it is or a reputable brand and designed for the purpose then it is fine for a WOF. When you get it cert'd you should make sure he notes it down just to prevent any problems. :D
