Who has rebuilt their 20V? (Silvertop)

Postby Sanxta » Mon Sep 27, 2004 9:16 pm

Yo.

Who has done this with standard parts (new: rings, pistons etc) and whatever else needed doing (head skim, p&p etc)?

I need to rebuild mine and want a rough idea before I go ringing around the reconditioners.

I'm not really interested in a full rebuild, I just want to get my compression back up. So does anyone know how much labour (in hours) the rings and pistons would take roughly?

Cheers,
Adam

For just rings and bearings it should be about $300-$500 more if you can't do the work your self. Give segidens (sp?) a call, and the'll hook you up with a good price

When you pull it apart make sure that you check the length of the head studs before you refit them and probably replace the rod bolts as they are torque to yeild or whatever which are also known as stretch studs or oncer's.

im rebuilding my 16v, and the only genuine parts im using are - rings, main bearing shells, OEM rods and pistons (thorough recon tho) and things like waterpump, pulleys etc. If ure rebuilding, i reckon its worth spending a little coin.. makes you a little more secure, in case u feel the need to strap on a MONGA turbo... :D

If you wanna get the compression back up, that is if you feel thats dropped which i doubt. You'll have to get the head checked out, make sure the valves are sealing properly, otherwise you could be losing precious cylinder pressure.

Thanks Matt,

I rebuilt mine over a year ago now when i ran a big end. I sent it away to an engine rebuilder as i didnt have the sufficent time or knowlege to do it myself. Ended up costing $2200 including parts and labour. I dont have my reciept with me, but heres some of the things u can remember that got done...

- New crank (buggered the old one)
- .5 oversized pistons and rings to suit
- Bottom end bearing kit
- Headgasket
- Engine stripdown
- Slight bore and hone on the block
- Head Check (including valve cleanup and reseating in new seats.
- Fitting of crankshaft and bearing kit, Setting tolerances.
- Reassembly of longblock

The cost for you would be a little bit less, as i bent my crankshaft beyond repair, and it ended up being stupidly expensive for a new one.

If you're sending it off to the rebuilders, you might as well get the whole job done. You dont necessarily need to buy all new pistons, rods valves etc if you're only doing a standard rebuild... What is the point when the essential solid parts that you have are fine? IMO you'd only want to replace significant wear items, like your rings etc...

Its quite a bit of an investment, and the only way you're gonna get your moneys worth out of it is to keep the car. If you're planning on selling in the near future (i.e. within a year or so) unless you're doing a heck of alot of k's per year, you're better off replacing it with a 2nd hand engine.

Anyway, sorry for my ramblings, hope that gives you some idea

yeah my compression figures are down, especially bad on cyl. 2 - i know coz i got a test.

what is involved in sealing the valves - new seals or summin - duzint sound too expensive or hard?

hey cheers bro - nah i appreciate all the "ramblings" i can get on this matter!

yeah i will only replace wear-prone bits, and am planning to keep the car all thru uni - until the TURBO car comes, whatever that may be!

cheers,
