Reconditioning gearbox, what do they do ?

Postby AE85.6 » Fri Sep 24, 2004 5:53 pm

picked up a spare T50 and was planning to (when i get some spare cash) get it reco'd, was just wandering what they actually do cause i cant say i have ever got one done, i assume they check/replace bearing and then inspect selectors/snycros,bushes ??? has anyone had experience with gettin a T50 reco'd also any approx price ????

also was thinking of gettin an 86 lsd diff head to swap with my 86 open one, possibly reco that too depending on cost and again what they actually do,

cheers

hey, wen we rebuild / recon heavy truck and equipiment parts, we only replace whats needed, or on its way out, generally bearings, seals , gaskets, inspect syncros, forks etc.

but some places, preferrably a specialist, will accually remove shafts, and the synchro hubs, selecters etc and thoroughly inspect and measure for warpage etc, i presume. Usually replace all load taking bearings and seals.

couldnt tell u a price tho, usually a thorough check will be expensive...
Id be sorta leaning towards a w5* upgrade instead maybe..?

Unless you can do it yourself and by the questions you ask i'd say you cannot, it's cheaper tp by a good s/h than to reco a gearbox.

ye i wanted a spare t50 reguardless, but i was planning to replace clutch kit at some stage soon so i thought depending on price possibly get it done on spare box then fit that one with new clutch etc so then its all renewed, i thought price would depend on what they do/replace but was just asking if anyone had already been through this. and the fact that when alot of us buy a spare box we havnt driven it ourselves so untill i fit it i dont know what sorta condition its in really ???

then after gearbox was thinking lsd diff head, same thing is it worth getting it checked out first or reco'd ??? has anyone been through gettin theirs reco'd ? or is it another case of go buy another one ???

we replace all bearings, and all other consumables, full dismantle then rebuild replacing syncro's and anything else thats worn if needed also measure selector shafts and forks to get rid of any slop, usally replace detents too.

dont know about a price though, im not involved in that side of things

Clutch kit has nothing to do with the box except you have to remove it to change the clutch.

oh ye i know i meant when i get round to swapping the clutch kit instead of putting the same box back on i could fit a nice reco'd one, so then i would have new clutch and mint gearbox cause i wanna get all the driveline renewed a little before i start playing with engine ideas cause more power is fine but if everything else is weak or sloppy you will just end up breaking stuff or having issues later having to replace things

T50 gearbox rebuilds

Postby Xylotrope » Fri Oct 01, 2004 10:27 am

Well i went to the mechanic shop :

All Vehicle Services
52c Diana Drive
Glenfield
444 4249

Spoke to Dave Hayes ... (this price is an approximate estimate for delivered out of car T50)

He said that a basic check and bearings replaced would be about 600
and worst case scenario replacing synchros etc would be around 1100

Of course all rebuilds will be slightly different .. but Dave is an honest guy and wont muck you around or replace parts that dont need replacing ...

If this sounds good .. give Dave a ring ... say Tony sent you ...

I will be getting mine done in a few weeks ..

PS Dave recomended "Diffs r us" in otahuhu or onehunga for rebuilding the LSD ... they are the best by him

Hope this is helpful

6 hundy ay hmmm will think about it for sure, as for diffs are us i was thinking of gettin a price off them for that anyways i think they have an account with my work to so i mite try for a bit of a discount but will worry about that when i find an lsd,

cheers for the help Xylotrope,

im just deciding what im gonna do now, i mite get new clutch kit when i have some cash and just fit my spare gearbox and see what its like, then i can decide which gearbox to get done maybe, hopefully its in better nick than present one, cause damn its staring to get noisy.
