Tints and race cars

Postby Stealer Of Souls » Wed Sep 29, 2004 11:32 pm

Hey there,
I'm building a weekend race car which i intend to daily a lot as well. So I was thinking of getting some tints, but can i have tints on a race car? I thought I read somewhere as long as they're road legal they're okay on a race car... Is this correct?

Not quite.

Page 174 of the manual (Appendix 2, Sch A 5.3 (5) (e) ) sets out the requirements. No tints on front windows, 35% on windows behind the front seating positions as per LTSA requirements.

Having said that, a lot of scrutineers won't worry about it depending on the level of competition but why take the risk?

As I said above, as per LTSA requirements. Mirror tints aren't legal for the road so not legal for a race car. Rules have only changed in the last year or two, prior to that no tints were allowed.

Had 35% tints on my Rover and no issues at club events such as the Domain Hillclimb.
THough it does state in the MSNZ manual taht they aren't allowed as purple-beasty says. Try logging onto the MSNZ website and read the online manual there. Failing that, Leon should be able to claify this :D

he he, yeah, I spotted this thread earlier, and Callum is absolutely 100% right in his reply, so I didn't need to put in my 2c

It is the same requirements as a WOF, but not allowing tints on front windows. Up until the most recent manuals (September 2003) tints were banned outright. In reality though, most scrutineers aren't going to be too worried by light tints, as they won't cause any real lack of visibility if you're in a big crash and marshalls are trying to decide to pull you out of the car, or leave you in there for an ambulance. Really dark, or mirror tints could *potentially* put you at risk under the wrong circumstances, so don't turn up with them on a competition car or you may well be turned away.

Okay so to check...

The WOF regulations now allow 35% on all side windows and upto (down to??) 70% on the rear (Class MA cars).
If I was to do 35% on the sides do you think I'd be okay at events. My cars no where near ready but i wanna make sure I'm not wasting too much money...

Thanks!

If you want to take the risk, go for it. Worst that will happen is you will have to pull the tint off your front side windows. Will depend entirely on the scrutineer and the level of event whether they even look at it. If you were getting a professional job rather than DIY, I would leave it off the front windows.
