Servicing AE101 FXGT

Postby GTCRSHR » Mon Oct 04, 2004 4:38 pm

Hi guys ...

well my ae101 fxgt is coming up to 80,000km soonish i was going to wait till 100,000 but i thought doing it now wont hurt

so im wanting to give her a GOOD Clean out motor wise so i prepared a little list

 Spark Plugs
 Spark Plug leads
 Gear box oil flush and replace
 Clutch fluid Flush and replace
 Brake pads (need doing) and brake fluid flush and replace
 Radiator flush and replace
 Fuel Filter replace
 Oil and Oil Filter replace
 Thermostat
Now i can do most of them things my self with the exception of the gearbox and the brakes i would rather a professional do them (Replacing pads/ discs/ and bleeding etc)

So 1. Sparks plugs/ Leads whats the best that i should be looking at getting.

2. Brake pads upgrade to TRD / equivalant or just stick with genuine toyota ones

3. Thermostat... TRD worthwhile ? or just stick with a genuine toyota one

Is there anything else i should be cleaning out / checking whilst im there

I thought about cam belt but i shall leave that till 100,000km and hopefully (or not hopefully should i say) by then the cluth will need replacing so can do that at the same time

Thanks in advance .... :)

1. Whatever plugs are in there at the moment
2. Depends what you want the car for. If its just road use then a standard set of pads should be fine.
3. Genuine

And btw, you should be doing a basic service (oil change) every 5,000kms and a filter every 10,000. Gearbox oil isn't that hard to do, much easier to have it on a hoist. Pads are easy but if you're not sure best to get someone who knows what they're up to to do it

if you're having to get things done professionally, why not do......

- cambelt & water pump
- various other belts (power steering, alternator etc)

at least you wouldnt forget about it.

Iridium plugs with trd leads mmmmm thats what i use. Never misses a beat a 7krpm .

You might as well do the dizzy while your doing all this. $10 for a rotor and about $60 for the cap from toyota. Might pay to get a new air filter as well.

Get the cambelt and water pump done as Distrb suggested. I blew my mums 5afe when the water pump gave way, drained all the water, burnt all the oil, "oh crap why is the temp gauge off the meter?", engine cut, smoke, very long lecture about racing from dad. Dont let this happen to you!!! 8O 8O 8O

Expensive plugs will only last longer, not gonna make any more power or anything. Up to you if you use them, cant see the point myself. Pays to check on them every so often anyway. As for the thermostat, if its working fine then leave it. No point fixing what isnt broken

I don't understand the mentality of replacing parts that there are nothing wrong with. Sure, all the above service items are fine, but I don't see the point of replacing the distributor cap and rotor - unless there's something wrong with them. Check the distributor cap and rotor for cracks, excessively worn contact points, carbon tracking, and make sure the button is working properly. If you have a multimeter you can check your high tension leads for resistance, Toyota's specification is <25k ohms per lead. Check the boots and contacts. If there was something wrong with any of the above items, chances are your car would develop a problem ie misfire, and you would know about it.

As for the cambelt replace it at 100,000km, earlier if you really want. No need to replace the waterpump unless the bearings are shot or it is leaking coolant.

taken into consideration

i think doing the water pump is just a preventative measure at the same time as the cambelt is off
