just a couple of q's on the oil system on 16v 4a-ge.

The oil press sender unit, (shown above) is this a vacuum operated unit? as in, could hook up a oil press gauge staight off it, or is it an electrical system which operates oil light? (off an ae82 blue btw)

That's a vac sensor, the electrical ones are much smaller.

Pressure sensor actually.

But you are correct. The one in the picture is for an electrical gauge.
The ones for a light will be a lot smaller and if your engine is out of an AE82 fx it will be the one for a light.

Arrrr, that be a pressure sender alright. Perfect spot to T into for a turbo oil feed and use the other side of a T for a pressure gauge. Or straight feed a gauge off it. Or have a T with original gauge on and an aftermarket one on the other end :)

sounds logical that i could straight feed a pressure gauge off it, but if its out of an AE82... they only had an oil light? so were is my electrical sender??

so how does ure gauge feed wire hook up to the sender on the block, not contesting your theory, but on my one it looks sorts like a tube connects on.. i senver seen an electrical contact like that..?

There is only one place for the sender and that is it. You cannot have a light and a gauge unless you make up an aftermarket part "t" adapter to run both.

If it has a light it doesn't have a sender.

That thing in the picture is for an oil pressure gauge, not a light. Looks like an ae92 one, my ae82 one is smaller.

You can buy the 't pieces' from an engineering/hydraulic shop if you want to run an aftermarket oil pressure gauge and the factory oil light. Worked for me.

if you use t pieces, get all 3 ends to have a female on it, and get a steel male -> male fitting to go into the block.
some look like steel but are still brass... scratch it with a key before buying.
sucks when those snap.

Any reason for steel over brass? I'm guess stronger and less likely to crack. I've just got brass fittings in mine and dont really want to have to change them all cause it would be a pain in the ass

only if you're using a brass t-piece... use a steel fitting to go inside the block.
brass ones tend to snap.

I got an aftermarket oil press guage in my car. I got a T piece from a fitting shop. Cost me 3 bux.

Pressure sender on one side, origional plug on the other.

You have to keep both in. Otherwise your car no like.

Mechanical or elec?

As Karl said if you have an electrcial sender hanging off a brass fitting they are too heavy for the end of it and may snap off and you loose all your oil.

That unit is the same as the one for an AW11 which has the electric gauge on the rh side of the dash cluster. The wire clips on to a brass T - a bit like a miniture golf tee that is in the middle of the sender unit. Tried the smaller sender unit for a light but got all sorts of crazy readings. Nice extractors though!!

Usually if you hook up a light to the big sender the more oil pressure that you have the brighter the light and if you have no oil pressure the light wont come on.

If you use the small sender on a gauge it will read max oil pressure when there is none and no oil pressure when there is.

They work opposite and cannot be interchanged.
